I obviously come across a lot of pre 60's nickels in my roll searching, is there much of a demand for them with dealers or is the most they are going to give is face value? I read awhile back(posted on the nickel roll searching thread The Goal: 25,000 Rolls of Nickels) that copernickeldaddy-you had someone who wanted all of your pre 58 nickels or something and they wanted every one you could get. Were they paying face or premium (if you don't mind)?
Thanks

There may very well be a small "niche" out there for them, and you're asking the right person to find that out.....but generally there is no premium for "circulated quality" Pre-60 Jeffersons with dealers or anywhere else that I know of. (of course we're not speaking of the "keys" or the "semi-keys") Having said that though........ anythings possible on "The Bay" ...... I might mention: I have saved a fair amount of them.......segregated them all and coin tubed them, then just sort of stopped doing that. Not sure why I started or stopped doing it. Short of, at least, the semi-keys, they're only face value Jeffersons......and no matter how far you go into the future, I'm not seeing a "future semi-key" materializing out of thin air for no reason whatsoever. If I return to saving them, which I might, I'll just try to "fill" one coin tube of each year and mintmark----- minus the keys and semi-keys of course ! Why not eh ? ....

I have seen a few times pre-1960 bulk lots of Jeffereson nickels selling for 7-10 cents apiece with no silver nickels present in those lots and no keys/semi-keys. I think at some point they will climb- they are very common, yes, but Buffalo nickels eventually clim, bed for common dates, so I think the same will happen for Jefferson nickels. The 1938-61 Whitman folder is the prime one to complete and has more demand than the 62-present folder, which should drive some demand. There are multiple dates that are pretty tough from circulation even though they are commons or close to commons, like 1950, 1955, 1958, some of the S mint marked 40s and 50s.

With the USG changing nickel composition in the near future, I expect values to climb next year.

I am willing to pay 1.5 face for lots of pre 60's nickels. I do try and find lots that will have a few harder to find years/mints. I do not get to roll search as much as I would like and I collect full date rolls of circulating coinage (always updating to the best condition coins). I am just hording for my retirement years and plan on creating sets of similar graded coins as a hobby.
I think in the near future we will be roll searching and pulling these 'nickel' composition coins from circulation just as we do the 'coppers'

I know what you guys mean by "keys". I call them the "rare five". Which nickels do you guys call "semi-keys"?

From my understanding keys and semi-keys are low mintage years. I'm not for sure what the semi-keys are for nickels, as I haven't begun that set.

They are worth 10 cents today but people are charging around 20 cents but no one buys them.
