Does anyone collect Three Cent Nickels? I think that they are pretty cool. I always get people looking at me strange when I ask for a Three Cent Nickel.

I think out of all U.S. coins I find the Three Cent Nickel the most unattracted . It's design just doesn't do anything for me.
Sorry to burst your bubble ,but that's just my opinion.

The 3c nickel has a face value of 3c, same as a 3c silver. Think composition, not denomination.

I just think it's kind of cool that the nickel which we associate with five cents was originally worth three. I like the use of Roman numbers.

Difficult coins to get fully struck.
I'd consider putting together a set if it wasn't so difficult (and therefore expensive) to get fully struck examples.
Generally there is striking weakness on at least the first "I" of "III".
The one in your pic is VERY nice.

I'm working on a circulated set, upgrading every now and then. The later dates, 1877 on, are kinda tough (except 1881). But because they are not tremendously popular, even the lower mintage pieces are available. Post 1876, the highest mintage is 38,000 for the 1879 (not counting 1881). And there is some interesting and unusual history with these pieces (see, e.g., the write up at the sidebar here on CCF). For example, because this is one of the first pieces struck from nickel (a hard metal), there were a few minting problems. And Three Cents is what a stamp cost ( Three Cent Silvers being hoarded in the Civil War).

edit: I've started a circulated trime set, too.

Cool post Garoyn. I just wanted an affordable coin from the civil war era.

Did you seriously get the coin you pictured as an affordable coin? That puppy is the most expensive of the lot and should run $6000-$16000.

I just bought an 1865 two-cent and three-cent coin today. (My first of each) Neither are very attractive, but I was just in the mood to buy something different. I don't think that I'll be getting any more in the near future, but who knows?

The only attractive Two Cents and 3c nickels that are attractive to me are the ones with the low mintages
