I fished this out of a melt-value bucket full of slicks:
Value-Of-Worn-Out-Newfoundland-Coins?

Because it is only just beginning to go slick (check around the C in CENTS), I assume it's worth a little bit more than melt. But...

1. Why is every Canadian/Newfie silver coin I see heavily worn and/or heavily cleaned? Have all of the good ones been snagged and secreted away by collectors, or did these coins just circulate very heavily?

2. When does a coin lose all numismatic value, in your opinion?

3. Do you ever look through melt-value silver buckets? Do you ever find anything good in them?

Wow, great find in a melt bucket, and I believe the reason that lots of Newfoundland coins are heavily worn is that they circulated a long while.

This one looks VG-8, nice pick up..

1. Low mintages, high circulation = scarce high grades
2. Combination of availability and demand more so than a particular grade. For example, a Victorian NFLD 50c with no date left sold for noticeably more than bullion value while an MS 1965 Canadian 50c barely sells for bullion.
3. N/A

There are still some nice newfie coins out there... but you're not far off the REALLY good items are generally in the hands of collectors... At my local LCS I asked to see all their newfie coins .. he brought out just a small box and nothing looked better than EF in the entire lot... anything better, my guess usually sells pretty quick and doesn't get stored in a "misc" maritimes box.

I think I your coin is an OBV #2 and I would personally grade this as VG.. trends list it at $24 and I would be happy with the first $12-18 if I was selling this myself... so picking it up for melt in my opinion is a GREAT deal!

I wish my dealer had a junk silver bin! I think the only reason the don't is b/c I would be there all day digg'n

This is barely related, but after months of campaigning, Newfoundland has finally been separated from "Canadian Provinces" and has been given its own country listing on Numista!

NFLD slicks should be worth a bit more than BV, and if you have a few of them, worth storing in a dedicated album page.

Newfoundland was a sovereign nation for only slightly more than two years in the early 1930's. Before that it was a slightly independent colony,and from about 1933 up to the time of entry into Canada in 1949 it was governed by a British_appointed commission as the Newfoundlanders found they could not handle the responsibility of independence after a little more than two years.

PS No Newfoundland coins were issued during the brief of true self-government.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

@ 'kuh_85'
Please excuse this small tangent;
I recently aqquired a Newfoundland 50c coin where the date was worn off;
I expected it to really only be a bullion value coin, but thought it was cool, because of the unique (for Canada) design, and because I only have a couple maritime coins;
Can you please cite how I might assess value to this coin - or where you found them to be selling for more than bullion?

@ OP - IMHO, that's a great find;
These older coins seem to be most susceptible to wearing off around the date, I'd happily include that in my collection.

@unruhjonny - That was my observation based on a number we sold on ebay.

On a side note if you find anyone selling VG newfie 50 cent coins just at BV... please shoot me a message.. I know it might be "coin blasphemy" but I intend on making my wedding ring from one...
