First off, this is my first post to this forum and I'm really new to coin collecting, so be kind if I ask any dumb questions or statements. I just started collecting Morgan dollars and I came across an 1878CC Morgan that looked strange to me, but it cost me very little, so I bought it anyway (the person who sold it to me knew nothing about coins and didn't know there was such a thing as a mintage). Besides the normal scratches and such you would expect to fine on circulated coin, the dollar has a brushed look to it (especially on the background of the coin). I also noticed a couple of greenish spots of the back (on the rim about 2:00 and one under the G in God). Again, it doesn't have the same look as my other Morgan dollars. I'm still not experienced enough to know what has been cleaned or might be a fake, but I'm also not forking over big dollars until I know more about spotting those types of things. I might have been a small sucker on this particular purchase, but I'll just chalk it up to a learning experience. Anyway, I've attached some pictures of the dollar and would like to hear anyone's opinion. I appreciate your time. Thanks! RB

Hi RB Welcome to the forum !
Can you weigh the coin ? It should weigh very close to 26.73 Grams minus a bit for wear.
From the pics /scans? it looks very flat to me . and has more than likely been harshly cleaned or poorly dipped .
if the coin is authentic then My opinion of the grade is VG to F cleaned.

Metalman - Thanks for feedback. I don't have a scale, so I can't say what the exact weight is. I did make a crude balance and used it against other Morgan dollars and the difference seemed very minimal if any (I realize that's not very accurate, but it's what I had handy). I used my digital camera for these pictures. It does have a flat brush type finish. With a different angle, you can really see the brushed lines all go from top to bottom (12:00 to 6:00). I can deal with it if it's just a cleaned coin, since my collection would not be considered a high-grade type collection anyway (I will work up to that as my experience and pocketbook grows). RB

No Problem RB
An accurate weight will tell the story on authenticity to a large degree ,,Im not familiar enough with the mint marks on the CC's to feel confident in using them as an authenticator myself ,,although I know that we have members here who are ,,perhaps they will drop in after bit ,, Keep an Eye on the thread .

I pulled out my ANACS-certified 1878-CC Morgan and all the features on your coin including the mintmark look like a very close match. I do see some distortion of your in Pluribus and in some other areas but I think that's just due to the photo which is not very high resolution. If your coin does have the same weight as other Morgans with a similar amount of wear, I'd be pretty confident it is the real thing. As Metalman says, VG to Fine condition, cleaned. As a ballpark price, I'd be pleased to find a coin like this for say $40. I'd snap it up and use it for a raffle prize at our coin club. If you got it for that (or less!) I'd say you did very well.

I doubt that it's a fake. The value just is not there to justify making any sort of good counterfeit. Now add one year to the date, and I'd be suspicious if something does not look right. Not too shabby looking if you're building a Carson Morgan set. I'd give it F details.

Thanks for the input.....I really appreciate it. I picked it up for $15....that's why I wasn't too worried about it and figured it was worth it just for the silver content alone (so long as it wasn't a complete fake). Actually, I ended up buying 4 coins from the seller for a total of $45....this Morgan and a 1883S Morgan dollar, a 1924 Peace dollar and a 1952 Carver/Washington half dollar....all and all, I was pretty happy about it. I figured with my limited "coin" budget, that this was probably the best opportunity to own any CC Morgan dollar (cleaned or not). Again, thanks for your time. RB
