What about 83/84? I must admit, excluding the aforementioned years (85-93/95), theyre the least prevalant of all years I have found in my 'noodling'...

I too have heard stories about RAM Minting Platypus 20c and later melting them down; can't remember what years this was for though...

It might make sense for 1988 as this was for the bicentennial coins that were released for that year, which the commemorative 50 cents and dollar coin were struck. Perhaps the mint want to strike commemorative coins for the 20 cents piece but some were excessively struck and decision was to melt them down and strike new coins but they didn't make it somehow. Would be interesting if this is the case. I'm not too sure how the rest of the years are like but I'm still looking...

It's believed that almost the entire production of 83/84 20¢ were melted down as there was no economical demand for them. Only 1 x $200 box of each year has surfaced so far maikng the rolls scarce.

All this info is available in "The Pocket Guide to Australian Coins and Banknotes" 15th Edition, author Greg McDonald. Price is $29.95 from your local Coin Store.

There's a wealth of info in this book & it's a must have for the serious collector. If you don't have a local coin store, try forum member bigfella's store in Newcastle.

I've been using Rennick's myself. Sounds like a Macca's might also be useful! Cheers Nancy

I have found some 83 and 84 20c coins, not many though, I think 3 1983's and 2 1984's. I have 5 1985's (not 3) and a 1993. I have also found 3 or 4 1988 20c pieces, a 1989 and a 1991. All very hard to find as you would expect!

I have lots of 1971 20¢ -and 72, '73, '97 50¢- in good condition.
The dilemma is what to do with them. Plenty of these are always on offer on ebay at any time.

If anyone has 20¢ or 50¢ spare commemoratives for sale, I am happy to pay for them with these coins (or very good examples of more common years).

b_j_w_79, You must be in an area where a lot of NCLT coins end up in circulation.

Apart from ones I have in Mint sets, I've never seen any 83 - 93 20¢ in circulation, so I'd say you've done very well to get the ones you've listed.
