Hi everyone! I'm thinking about searching through a heap of 5c pieces. I was wondering if there are any in particular I should look out for. I am aware of the 1972 coin but I'm unsure about any others that may be worth keeping. Any help would be great. Also while I'm here what does everyone think of the 5c pieces? Do you think they will be around much longer? Thanks, Ben

Gday, according Renniks 22nd edition, the following 5-cents attract a premium: 1966C 1966L 1967 1968 1969 1985 & '86 mso it seems that they have been minted every year from 1966, so it'd be a nice set to complete.
In 1981, they were minted at three different establishments, in approximately equal quantities, but I have no idea how to differentiate between them.
And, echidnas are such cute little fellas, although you'd never recognize one in the wild from having seen the coin.

I found the late 60s 5 cent coins are tough to find - I don't even have a spare for any of them and I'm still missing a 68. Oddly enough, I'm still missing 75, 91 and 07 otherwise it's complete. Peter, how can I tell the difference between C and L?

G'day, no mintmarks, but 1966C has one short spine (out of many), contrasted with 1966L's long spine, in the 10 o'clock position, very near the upper edge of his forelimb. I am suddenly reminded why I hate varieties.
1968 = 67 million
1975 = 44 million
1978 was a lower mintage than most other years: 25 million, but Renniks gives it no premium in price.
1991 = 29 million

Is this 1966 5 cents struck in Canberra?

G'day, I've taken the liberty of recycling your pic. I've drawn a circle on it. The short spine at the centre of the circle is, as best I can judge from Renniks page 50, the one that matters. And, yes, it seems to be a short spine, therefore from Canberra. Image: 5cent1966c-ithinkc.jpg25.23 KB Peter in Darwin

Thanks everyone. Please keep the information coming my way . Yesterday I managed to get a heap of 2006 5c rolls from the bank. Does anyone think these are worth holding on too? They do have the highest mintage of all of the 5c pieces I believe. I'll be interested in everyones thoughts. I might try to sell some on ebay and see how I go (I do have around 90 $2 rolls of them to play with).

What I do with rolls is to open the reverse/reverse combinations, as they attract no premium on ebay due to their lack of an identifying date. I then search them for rim Cuds, strikethroughs and any other error. I have found rim Cuds in the 2006. Generally the condition of 2006 5 cent piece was abysmal. The other thing I do is to keep all (or as many as you care to) the CHU. If you are looking at them through a 10 X Loupe, I can assure you that you won't find many if your carefully selective. The rest of the coins can be put away. They are always worth $2 a roll and can be opened and spent if they don't increase in value.

Thanks to Nancyc, I've just completed my 5 cents set. It took too long... http://www.gxseries.com/numis/austy...cimal.htm#5cMaybe if I have the time, I'll look for the London Mint 5 cent but I doubt it. I haven't see any 60's 5 cents for a long time.

G'day, this link takes you to a website that has very clear pics, enabling you to distinguish the variations between different mints: Hartshorn's decimal varietiesPeter in Oz

Hi everybody! Over the last couple of days I have been through $300 worth of 5c pieces and found enough of all the other coins for a few sets except for the elusive 1972 5c coin. I found 6 in total and 3 of these were badly damaged and not really worth keeping.....but I still did! If anyone is willing to trade so I can get some of these please let me know and I'll see what I have to offer (I seem to be asking for a lot of trades lately, sorry I'm just trying to complete a few sets).
p.s. I will put up some stats on the numbers of coins from each year I found (only did this for $100 worth though)
