Hi everyone!

Does anybody collect and/or keep the 1971 20c pieces they find? I have been pulling them out of circulation when I see them due to the relatively low mintage they have and I have quite a number of them now. I was just wondering what everybody else thought about them.

Thanks, Ben

I always keep any low mintage years I find -any denomination- as long as it is reasonable condition; poor condition ones go straight back in the change. The older the coin or the lower the mintage the less discerning I am about condition.

8,947,000 is the lowest mintage of the platypus 20 cents. CHU is $67....Unc is $65 (go figure) A roll is $900.

As Jeff said, unless its in real good nick, I'd put it back into circulation. Or keep it to swap with other (a better idea).

Buy a Maccas -- The pocket guidE to Australian Coins and Banknotes by Gre McDonald. $29.95. If your serious about coins don't wait.

G'day, as an alternative, Renniks 22nd edition (2007) isn't pocket-sized, but the price has started to drop: now $26.95. I prefer it to Macca's.

That said, I actually don't have any of those 20 cents pieces. Good question.

I have a complete set of the 20 Cent Pieces, as well as two extra of the 1971 coin.

I have kept heaps of these and know I'm thinking of stopping. On average I find about 1 every $45 worth. I have just been keeping them all and now I have around 200 of them. This doesn't include the coins I have sold and/or given away. Most have been pretty well circulated though!

justabeginner,

I also have complete sets of one Cent through 50 Cent Australian coins, all in Dansco Albums.

The reason I'm fortunate enough to have these sets is thanks to friends in Australia such as Gregk, Triggersmob, Muckeye, humpybong, Nevol, Snooba, and others.

I've been concentrating on decimal coins for months. Next area of work will be pre-decimal, especially the pennies. Don't think I'll be getting a 1930 any time soon however.

And, when you do go looking for a 1930 penny, don't set your sights too low. http://www.smh.com.au/news/national...3368943.html

1971 - 8.94Million
1985 - 2.70Million
1993 - 1.49Million
1995 - 3.69Million

I must say that next to the 85/93/95, finding 1971's is EASY! I still havent found any halfway decent 85/93/95's (or Wavvy 66's)! Which is strange considering I have pulled a 1990 and 1991 out of circulation, and there sure are fewer of those out there!

85/93/95 is all I need to complete my Ralph Maklouf 20¢ series! If anyone has a spare or two, you know where I am! :)

Question - was there any 20c struck in 1988? The bloody RAM report mentioned 0.2 million struck in that year but again, I don't know what to trust...

You're unlikely to find many 85/93. I've not seen 85 other than in my Mint Set, 1993 coins mentioned in RAM annual report are believed to have been coins from previous years, held back by RAM & released into circulation in 1993, not actually minted in 1993. 1995 circulation coins are United Nations, no circ platypus that year.

From 86 - 93 & 95, no platypus coins went into circulation. Any from those years that you've found, would have come from busted up mint or proof sets. I doubt you'll find better ones very soon. Anyone that has them will be reluctant to part with them.

I keep all the 1971 coins I find, when I've got a heap, cull all the yukkiest ones & reject them.

It's possible that 1988 20¢ may have been melted down, and it's believed they only exist in mint & proof sets.

I think I have found 2 or 3 1985 20c coins in my searches . I have also found a 1993 but I'm not sure if it has come from a mint set . As for the 1971 I have hundreds of them that I have kept. I'm trying to cull some on ebay as we speak just to move some on. I'm going to use any money I make to buy some coins I need to fill gaps.....fingers crossed!
