Hello everyone. This is my first time using a forum. I enjoy collecting US coins for every year and mint mark within the series. I've collected coins since I was about 5 years old but did not understand how or why. My dad got me started. As an adult I've enjoyed collecting and am currently working on completing my Lincoln, Jefferson, and Roosevelt type sets. I look forward to learning new information from seasoned collectors. I enjoy the history behind our coins and want to continue to learn more. I do have a question regarding the Dansco #8113 Jefferson nickels 1938-2005 w/ proofs album. In the Red Book it shows for example that there is a 1957 P&D and also a 1957-P Proof. But, the Dansco #8113 Album does not provid a spot for the proof. It does start providing spots for proofs in 1971 for the '71 P, D, & S-Proof. So my questions are: Is this an error in the Dansco Album? Which coin do I display in the album - the 1957-P or 1957-P Proof? Lastly, is there an album that has a place to display both P, D, and P- Proof for the coins that have proofs between 1950 and 1971? Thank you all for considering my questions. I look forward to hearing back from you.

to the Community! I moved your welcome post to a more appropriate forum for your question. Dansco albums that include holes for proofs are for "proof only" years. San Francisco started making only proof nickels in 1971, so that is why the proof holes start there. Before then, you have to choose whether you want the proof or the business strike in the hole.

Proofs were made off and on starting in 1938 for the Jefferson nickel. During the war after 1942 they stopped and then started again in the 1950s. Production stopped again from 1965 to 1967. After that, proofs were only struck at San Francisco. Like jbuck said, prior to the S mint only proofs, you could use either business strike or proof.

and with Jbuck When the Dansco says "with Proof only issues", there will be a hole for those years where San Francisco made only a proof coin and no business strike (MS) coins. For example from 1950 through 1964 Philadelphia made both a proof and business strike nickel(proof in proof set). Dansc lets the collector decide which coin they want to fill that hole with. I am using these dates as a example, as stated there are other years for proofs Jefferson's from 1938 - 1942. Your Dansco should have a hole for "S" mint proofs from 1971 to date. You may also notice there is no hole for the 1994 P and 1997 P matte proof nickels. In my opinion these are part of a complete Jefferson set, I hope someday they update the album to include them.
