Before you say anything, yes, I know that Italy has switched to the Euro. But before they used arcade tokens, they used the Lire. Just look at it, and bask in it's glory. They are made of stainless steel This is an 100 lire coin, I have many others but this is the prettiest IMO. The obverse bears some woman And the reverse has Athena (Minerva) with an Olive Tree

And here is the 50 lire coin, which got smaller over the years First, the size, which in this 1991 example is miniscule. Then, the obverse The reverse And the thickness compared to a modern clad dime

I agree that these classical design elements are appealing. Several coins of 20th century Greece and Italy seem to allude to or incorporate elements of their ancient Greek and Roman counterparts. I find most of them quite appealing. One my favorites is the 2 lire of 1917 with Minerva and quadriga.

Yes, that lire is very nice. During the reign of Vittorio Emanuele III, Italy also had beautiful designs (on the side not portraying the ruler :p). Another example of classic design: Swiss coins of 20. century.

Don't see how the Euro would be arcade tokens But I agree that the Swiss coins are very beautiful in today's world.

That "some woman" was the goddess Athena.

Quote: Don't see how the Euro would be arcade tokens To clarify, Euro coins look like American arcade tokens.

I quite like the Italian coins and I'm currently working on getting full sets of the 100L and 50L coins. I always cringe when I look at the Blacksmith on the 50L though. Another Italian coin that I have taken a liking to is this 10 Centesimi... _Italy_10_Centesimi.jpg) My favourite, however, is this one... _Italy_500_Lire.jpg) Steve

There are a lot of nice designs on French coins from the early 1900's.
