A buyer recently bought an MS61 NGC 1944 S Half Dollar from me. Now the guy wants to return it for no other reason than "I don't like it." I don't think I have to honor this request. The buyer bought the coin based on good photos that showed exactly how the coin looked, and it really just seems ridiculous.

I guess there would be a few things I would consider.

1-what is your return policy?

2-You can check and see if the buyer also bought another similar coin through ebay ( I am assuming it was an ebay sale?)sometimes people will buy similar items, receive them and then pick the best and return the others.

3-What is the buyer's feedback history? Do they have low feedback or are they a long time eBayer? problem buyer? any false positive feed backs from sellers? any hints of returns? check out his bidding history for retractions in the last 6 months. log out and check your item and click his bidder id, you will see the info listed.

If all of the above look ok and you do have a return policy I would honor it.

If you have a no returns policy, then it is up to you. but expect a case being opened or possible negative feedback. Buyer can make something up to get a return especially with the way ebay sides with the buyers.

Just my 2 cents worth.

good luck, RK

What was your return policy on the auction? That seems like pretty critical information to me.

I accepted the return. It was fishy because the buyer stated that he had ordered the wrong item, when he actually didn't like it

Nothing wrong with not liking a coin on receipt. Technically, your return policy (yes/no and for how long) would govern, but from a business standpoint I think it's alway best to accept returns for any reason as long as they're timely.

I know not everyone agrees with me, but IMO all coins bought from pics should be returnable, period. The buyer is taking a risk that the pics were not a fair representation and thus should be allowed to return.

But I do think said returns should be paid for by the buyer - both ways - unless there is a substantive REASON for the return like that it isn't the coin pictured at all or was damaged in shipping etc. If you want to take a chance on a coin - on spec - then if it just isn't as good as you hoped you should pay for the shipping to "check it out". But if the pics were intentionally doctored or lit to hide flaws, then you shouldn't be stuck with a clunker due to seller deception - and lots of pics are deceptive!

I've bought hundreds of coins from pics and I've sold over 200. I've only had one return ( for an unreasonable reason but I just told them their reason was BS and refunded their $ anyway ). I've had to return about 5% of coins bought that way due to damage ( 2 burned up in shipping as they were not properly packaged ) or being sent the complete wrong coin or mostly due to unreasonably deceptive pics. IMO, if you are bargain hunting you WILL get a clunker here or there that is nothing like the pics. I've also been sent the wrong grade/coin ( and then asked to keep it for a partial refund ) on multiple occasions. They all claimed it to be a simple human mistake - sometimes with some long BS story of why/how - but I think too many do it intentionally - bait and switch. IMO those scum should pay for shipping both ways and more!

If I ever make that mistake as a seller - and I doubt I will as I am extra careful since I would expect the same - I would bend over backwards to make it right. My first inclination would not be to try to negotiate for the buyer to keep the wrong coin for less $ ( to me that is sleazy anyway and the tell that it wasn't just an error - and they always want way more than FMV on their mistake coin to boot ). The other tell is it is always a grade BELOW, or a less expensive YEAR/MM, than was purchased. If human error, then it should be randomly BETTER than purchased 50% of the time. But that has NEVER been the case! I did get a discount on a future purchase by a couple ( one I used to get a free coin from them which IMO was a fair resolution for the time I spent dealing with their "human" mistake ). Not getting the coin paid for costs me in time and hassle and then likely in hunting for a replacement and when I know it was a scam attempt it tees me off. There are too many sharks on ebay trying to feed off of others and steal with little risk and no ethics.

So, IMO, those of us that are honest and fair may have to deal with returns on questionable grounds from time to time as a result of all the scammers and idiots on both ends of the equation. Such is the cost of doing business this way!
