So I ordered some coins and in the checkout process, I updated my address but I neglected to update my zipcode. I didn't notice my mistake until tracking said that my package was being shipped to my old zipcode.
How easy is it to rectify this situation? Do I just wait for it to rectify itself, or do I contact USPS (which I am planning on doing) and explain the situation to them?
Not a high-value item, but I would like to get it safe and sound.

Are you talking about US Mint, ebay, PayPal or what?

In any case, you should be proactive about it. Change the zip yourself on all sites that you have your address stored. Also, make sure that your shipping address matches your billing address. If the billing address is wrong you may run into situations where orders are called back because of an incorrect zip. :)

Try google searching the adress it was sent to. You could potentially find a phone # to call. Alteritvly, you could send a letter to the person explaining the mishap. Otherwise, yes, contact USPS.

Depends a lot on how far your present location is to the previous one. Meaning if you are in the same area that has multiple zips but just moved from one to another the item would most likely get to you. If you are talking a much farther move, expect the package to be returned to sender.

Working on it. For anyone reading, NEVER try calling the Doraville Post Office in 30340. They put me on hold, forgot about me, and disconnected me after two hours. They did this every time I called, so I stopped calling. A Google search showed that they are a lazy bunch that does not care about customer service. The incorrect zipcode was about 20 minutes away from where I was living, and it was a unique address not seen elsewhere in the US, but being the lazy bunch they are, the Doraville personnel kept sending my package to the wrong address 4 TIMES! (I think Einstein said something about insanity being doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.) They Didn't even think to check why the package was undeliverable and fix the problem. I had to call the USPS calling center to get any help. The end may be in sight!

If the package is being held at the post office, you will probably have to go in person to retrieve it. You probably should not delay very long, because if it can't be delivered the post office may send the item back to the return address.

I don't have a car and the Post Office is over 20 minutes away. I'll see what I can do...

Looks like the Doraville Post Office is walking distance from the Doraville MARTA station.

Going to go pick it up today. The manager pulled it out of the mail stream for me (at the persuasion of USPS headauarters) and is going to hold it until I pick it up.

If a Seller is using stamps.com (or similiar) software to print his labels, 99.9% of address problems like this will get flagged BEFORE printing the shipping label. It at least gives the Seller an opportunity to contact the buyer for address verification and prevents an item from getting misrouted or delayed.
The move to Zip+4 Zipcodes has helped prevent the type of problem you just experienced.
