There appears to be LOTS of hairlines running from 8 to 2 o'clock. You could have an abrasively cleaned coin.

What did you pay for it? I got one in AU condition for about $325. This is an undervalued coin IMO. I also have a complete set and I am thinking about upgrading it. So much easier than filing a Morgan collection. So many beautiful coins and so little money to buy them all.

Agree - I'd be worried about a cleaning as well.

Nice muddler. Is this a complete set or a year set? People have so little appreciation for an "honest" set these days.

There are only three key dates and all can be had in AU condition for less than $500. This reminds me of Indian Head Quarter Eagle. You can buy them all in AU for less than $400 except for 1911D which is going to cost you, but it is just one coin. You can buy it in AU for $4700 or less. The big jump comes when you go to MS condition. Only 55,680 minted and the 1916 LSQ goes for much more with the same mintage. Most other gold sets are very expensive to complete such as Saint-Gaudens which I sometimes dream about. There is the 1908S with mintage of just 22,000 which can be had for $3750 in EF condition. I don't understand why this coin is so cheap relative to others in that set. I understand about "Big MeltDown" by FDR but still mintage is so low and coin is so iconic and beautiful and rare.

How may people collect Saint-Gaudens double eagles by date and mint? Supply and demand. The supply is admittedly low, but so is the demand. And even though the mintage is low, what is the survival rate? Even if it is only 5% there are probably enough coins available that every collector that wants one can have it.
