Doing away with the Monarch/President on the obverse of coins has been a bone of contention on a fair number of forums and chat boards.

As far as I am aware of, for Aussie issues, there are only two coins that do not bear an effigy of the Monarch on the obverse (I stand to be corrected here)one is the 1967 Goose Pattern Dollar which is now very scarce and is raising in price (AUD$350++) and the other is the 1813 Holey Dollar and dump ( AUD$100K ++ this one I can only dream about).

The mailman brought me two display boxes for the Lunar Coins, and a 1991 Kookaburra today.

Box and coins are extremely attractive.

Maybe in dollars and cents, not worth that much, but to me, a highlight of my collection.

I got my 2006 Lunar coins today and all I can say is "WOW". The mints in Australia must have one fantastic quality control department as I have never seen a bad coin from the Down Under! My wife now has the whole series and I am still trying to catch up but.....I have more Kookaburras than she does and I also have some of the square 50 cent bullion coins!

Terry:

I now have all the Lunar coins, to date, and am starting on the Kookaburras. I have the 1990, 1991, and 2006.

Also, have seen pictures of the Kangaroo coins.

However, the square 50 cent bullion coins are new to me. Any link you might suggest where I could get a look at them?

2005 marks the end of the long running Kookaburra series...thank God for that...this series has been unpopular with Aussie collectors due to the numerous types issued (privy marks, different denominations, specimens, proofs etc).

Only 4 square type Proof Kookas were issued commencing from 2002. They are the 1/2 oz silver with a nominal face value of fifty cents.

Mintage for them were:

2002.........75,000....issue price....AUD$39.50
2003.........75,000....issue price....AUD$39.50
2004.........30,000....issue price....AUD$43.00

Here is the link to the last one..

Have a Look

Cheers....Lim

Thanks for the information.

I like the Kookaburras, and am sort of surprised Aussie collectors don't care for them.

Thanks again.

The ones you should keep your eyes out for are:

The ones with the US quarter privy marks, commenced in 1999 only 15 privy marked coins were issued but was discontinued mid series.

There are also other US type privy marks on the Kookas, namely 1995 Liberty Head (mintage 500),Golden Eagle (mintage 800),1997 Walking Liberty (mintage 1000), 2002 Stars and Stripes (mintage 18,500).

The most impressive of the above is the one issued in 2002 with a soaring Kooka flying over the map of Australia in the background. Instead of a small privy mark, the US flag is displayed in full colour over the map of Australia. This coin is known as " Tribute to Freedom".

I don't have one so I cannot post a scan of that coin here...[:p]

Just found out myself and it is best that I pass in on.

Though it says on the Perth Mint site that 2005 is the last year of issue for the Kooka series, I nearly fell off the chair when I saw listings of the 2006 1oz specimen coin on ebay.

Here is a typical example

On checking further, I found a fair few listings both in the US and Germany...this coin is not even featured in the Perth Mint site..[:0]

The only logical explanation I can draw before checking with the Mint is that it says on their site " 2005 marks the end of proof issues".

The whole Kooka series is a confusing one, hence it's unpopularity downunder. One reason is the design of the reverse proof coin in one year becomes the specimen design the following year.

It would seem a few of us downunder (me included)has assumed wrongly 2005 is the end of the series.I will certainly check with the Mint in the morning and advise....
