The Australian Lunar, 1 ounce, $1 silver coins are absolutely beautiful. I only have five of the coins currently, however I just received a small windfall, and will soon spend it to complete the set. I think there are currently 11 coins, right? The suggestions (help) I need include the following: 1. Do I leave them in the plastic capsules they arrived in? Or, is there a better holder? Airtites? 2. How do I display the coins. I know that Airtite sells albums. Is that the way to go, or is there a better way? 3. How should I go about buying the remaining six coins I need? Suggestions as to a good company would be appreciated. 4. What is the size of the one ounce coins? 38 mm? Thanks for any suggestions. These are great coins, as are the Britannias, and they have re-vitalized my interest and excitement in coin collecting. Edited by rggoodie 12/26/2005 8:44 pm

Hi Gary Burke... The lunar series in silver started in 1999 (rabbit),2000 (dragon) 2001 (snake), 2002 (horse), 2003 (goat),2004 (monkey)2005 (rooster) and 2006 (dog). In all there are 12 animals in the series and is not due for completion until year 2010. The 11 lunar animals you are refering to are the ones in gold. This series commenced in 1996. Plastic capsules versus airtites? Airtites will win hands down. I keep mine in airtites. Displaying of individual collections is very much a personal thing. Mine are "entombed" away where it does not see the light of day. Downies with a US branch would be a good choice for continual purchases of Aussie issues. They are the biggest dealer here downunder. I can't find my measuring tape...but will confirm for you later the diameter of the coins. Cheers....Lim

Hi Gary Burke...as you may be aware of, the collecting of lunar themed coins has a large following especially by collectors of Chinese origins. Though I have posted that my current collection is entomed away, it is only for the time being, they are parts of an ambitious vision/project I am working on. This vision was to mount the lunar coins in the confguration of a clock face in a specially made large wall plague. The centre of this clock face is the one kilo "diamond eyes" lunar coin of the year of my birth, which in my case is the year of the dog. It is then surrounded by concentric rings of the 2 oz,1 oz & 1/2 oz coins. As my birth time was 8.00pm,the lunar coins I will be using to denote this time on the clock face will be the gold gilted ones. When completed, this display will be awesome...if I live that long to complete it.... [:p]

I can't imagine coins much more attrractive than these.
I'm still giving some thought as to how to display them, and/or store them.
I'm really getting my second wind as a coin collector. Only problem is that, being retired, the available funds are limited. Oh well, it will be fun doing what I can afford.

I ordered two of the display cases like the one you have.
Will use one for the Lunar coins and the other for the Kookaburras.
Thanks again for your help.

The mailman was good to me today. Delivered 2004, 2005, qnd 2006 Lunar 1 ounce coins, and 2003, 2004, and 2005 Britannias.
Now I'm waiting for the case for the Lunar coins to arrive. Next, I need to figure out how to display the Britannias.
Also, I think I'm interesting several others in the coins, and hope to make collectors out of them.

So Gary is now the A.O.D. Great to have him on board as a darksider! Well, Gary you had to go and open up the door to a whole new world and now you will NEVER be able to close it. Once those foreign beauties get under your skin you are infected for life! Oh how I love this disease! Now if we can just get all the nations to DROP the QUEEN and we will DROP the PRESIDENTS and coinage will take on a whole new look! Wouldn't that be great?

I think it's safe to say that you and I would agree on most things...probably 95 percent...both numismatics and life in general.
However, drop the Queen and drop the Presidents we don't agree on.
Just something I like about the idea. Maybe the historian in me, I don't know.
I'm sure we would agree on the reverse sides of coins, and improving on the artwork there.
As I sit and write this I am looking at my eight 1 ounce Lunar coins, and my eight 1 ounce Britannia coins. Fantastic!
I am still trying to figure out what to do with the Britannias. I think they are 40mm, and so I guess I need to see if there are air tites which will work for them, and then decide how to display the air tites.
By the way, thanks for remembering me regarding the latest Euro. I look forward to adding it to the collection.
A.O.D.
