Hello, just wondering if someone can tell me if these 1892-O and 1897-O Barber halves are real or fakes? Sorry if the photo's aren't the best, they were just taken with my cell phone. I'm at work till morning and can try to get better photo with a real camera tomorrow if needed. I've had one person say they think they are real and another say they are fake so I don't know what to believe. They both look pretty good but they weigh 12.6g on my scale and the RedBook says they should be 12.5g but how accurate were the blanks back in the late 1800's? I'm sure they weren't all exactly the same. Anyway Please let me know what you think. I'm no expert but I can't see anything that stands out and points to them being fakes.

Thanks,
Jon

Thanks for the speedy replies!! Does anyone have pictures of real versions of these 2 dates so I can see what they're supposed to look like.

Both dates and mintmarks are way off so I am saying fake...If they were both real in that high condition each would be worth several thousand a piece...Return immediately....Always buy certified examples of key barber dates, cause there are a ton of fakes.

Both are fakes.

To see what real ones look like visit the Heritage Auctions website (HA.COM) and search their coin auctions.

For the record, here's the 1897 O. Note the lump in the middle of Liberty's neck. I couldn't find the 1892 O.

TypeCoin971793......that's the 1897-O that I posted just with the photo edited right? I'm not seeing the difference in it other that the lighter and darker areas.

I've been searching ebay for photo's to compare the ones I posted to. I just cant seem to see the difference in the date, but the mint mark on the ones I posted is definitely much larger than on the graded ones on ebay. My photo's aren't the best since they were just taken with my cell phone. The date is actually much clearer on the 1892 than in the photo. Must have been bad light or my unsteady hand that made it look so funny.

@qktbird

No, it's a completely different coin offered for sale on a website who sponsors the selling of counterfeit coins. We are not allowed to name the site, so we call it the no-no site. They look exactly the same because they were struck from the exact same dies. Proof your coin is a counterfeit.

Don't need to go further than the numerals.

Very accurate. The blanks were still being weighed individually with a Weight Tolerance of .097 grams so a weight of 12.6 might just barely be within tolerance (How precise is your scale? And your weight figure? Not that it really matters since it has been shown that they are fakes.)
