I just came across this while going through some kennedys from my dad collection & adding some to mine.

I don't know much about error's or if this actually is one?
The extra marks near the nose are outward , the rest appear to be imprints. I couldn't find anything online about this particular coin.

It was definatly on the coin before the kennedy portrait was struck , so I don't think it's just an indent type mark from being stacked in a roll etc....

thanks for any help !

Those marks are from a die clash. This happens when a die pair comes together without a coin between them, some of the obverse and reverse patterns are superimposed on each other. Coins after this die clash show the marks where they hit on the highest (lowest relief) parts of the dies. This is a very nice clash, the marks are very clear, you don't see alot of them this clear and severe, this die was probably polished soon after or retired.

Personally, I like clashes- especially when they are so clear as this one. Some say they don't carry a premium, I would pay a premium for a coin like that, so it is definitely a keeper . Nice one !

Funny, I posted about this coin earlier today under "$0.50 Roll Hunters" I was asking if anyone else had these or knew of them and here you are. I have several of these coins in the same condition as well as others where the indent is less and the surface is quite scratchy looking. The scratching I assume is from the die being polished (but not that well).

The scratching is probably from polishing attempts. Alot of people here search rolls of halves, myself included. I have never found one with clash marks that severe, I am sure others might have.

There were no mint sets made in 1982 and 1983 so I tend to keep most every half from those years unless they are damaged. That half looks to be in pretty decent condition along with that nice clash. Since you say you have more, when you reach 50 posts I might be interested in acquiring one. Thanks for sharing !

I'm just getting back into coins after a few years break , & am looking into the errors side. I puchased the cherrypicking guide to errors & just started reading it. Right after I sent for the book , I found this coin.
So , would this be considered an error or is this a common occurance ?
I don't think I'd be interested in selling it , but what type of price might something like this return ? I haven't read much of anything about die clashes, it's mostly coins struck on other planchets(sp) , offset ,dbl strikes etc....

thanks for the great info guys

Clashes like this one on a larger denomination coin generally do bring some premium value - best to check in with someone who deals in this sort of thing to find out what a realistic value is. I would assume north of $10 for an uncirculated example.

I think clashes are very cool! I have about a half roll of 2007-P cents, BU, with a very notable clash. There are posts on Coppercoins.com site of cent clashes, but no other denomunations.
What would be nice is if sone one able to make overlays, would post an overlay clash. I'm sure I am not the only one interested in seeing one. Thanks,
Dick
