Hello everyone So I've been working on a Barber dime set for some time now , probably almost 2 years .. I still haven't got the key coin for this set though , the 1895o .. I've got almost every p mint coin in AU , most of them slabbed .. I have settled for lower grades with some of the tougher dates , I'm just not ready to settle for a AG3 or G4 95o .. So I thought about putting my barbers on hold and working on something simple and less expensive while I save up some cash .. I've purchased a Few Mercury dime here and there the past couple years.. So I thought maybe I could do a slabbed Mercury dime set of the 18 coins from 1940-45.. This should be a rather inexpensive set to put together along as I stay away from full band coins... I'm wondering what you guys think ( ball park figure) on what it would cost to put this together ? Since the 4 mercs I already have are ms64 - 65 icg and anacs coins I thought I stick with those two company's and buy coins in about the same grade range 64-66 *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

1934-1945 are relatively easy in MS grades, even in FULL BANDS (except for the 1945)The early years and the 16-d,21,21-d are going to be your bigger problems in MS grades. I stared a full band album and then stupidly sold it. The Mercury dimes were one of my favorite coins, and so much design detail in on that little coin that I think it is a excellent series to work on and try completing.

If you find all of the right coins in all MS65 its going to run you near $500 total retail. If you go to some coin shows and local shops and use a keen eye to buy raw, probably 40% less than that. I put a 1934 to 1945 MM set together in MS. It took about 3 years. I cracked my fair share of PCGS coins on some of the less expensive common dates of the 40's but for the 30's I just shopped 'til I dropped and found some real raw beauties. I located a raw '35-S with FB at an LCS in what is probably 64 if not 65. That's an expensive coin in a TPG holder. The dealer had it in his UNC Mercury tubes and because he had so many tubes of dimes I know he did not know what he had or perhaps could have cared less since these coins sat for many, many years not searched and untouched. I actually pulled several beautiful coins that trip a couple of years ago. I paid very little money for those pickups. I find that old time dealers, like this guy was, who have had a storefront for 4 decades will generally give you great coins at great prices as long as they like you. They're out there if you look. Go buy the Capital Plastics Holder for your short set (they sell it) and go to work!

Just remember that spending your money putting together a Merc set will slow you down saving for the key and semi-key Barber dimes. But I understand that collecting activity is necessary to keep from going stale. Sort of being caught between a rock and a hard place.

That's a sharp set and similar to what I'm looking to do .. They sure do look nice all being in a holder like that rather than my plan to keep them all slabbed .. Buying raw I'd save atleast 40% probably closer to 50%. Maybe I could purchase one of those holders , crack out the 4 mercs I have and save more cash for this 95o in the long run ... I understand either way this will slow me down with my barbers but shoot I've been working on these so long and I have 73 of 74 coins , only missing the 95o .. It has been a expensive venture , don't get me wrong barbers will always be my favorite but I almost feel as if I need a break from them .. Any suggestions on where to purchase one of these holders ?

thanks for the props on the set everyone! i won't presume to know your financial situation but at $300 for a short-set of mercs (40's only) if you can buy raw with a keen eye should not take forever financially as much as it will take to find what you consider the "right" picks. Here is a link to all things holders http://alcodistributors.com/coin_su.../capmult.htmcustom orders for out of stock can take 90 days but time flies when you're having fun. post pics as you go.
