Not an obvious fake, but who could confidently bid on this given the overall circumstances and the totally inadequate photos?

See: http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-1893-S-M...t_578wt_1153

Additional note: 23% buyer's premium tacked on to boot!

That's funny, I'm thinking of buying at their live auction.

But, I wonder what the heck their game is. Using ebay solely as advertising for a live auction!? Has anyone seen this before?

They check out as a legit auction house on. I'm not convinced the coin is fake, but better photos would be needed by anyone that would buy this coin.

The auctioneer can't be bothered to remove a coin from the plastic flip before photographing it?

Many "legitimate" auction houses are noentheless prone to misdescribing and selling altered, fake, and impaired coins because numismatics is not their specialty. Even at the minimum bid, there's way too much money at stake here to be trusting these folks' expertise, especially considering (as has been remarked upon) their utter lack of appreciation for the need for useful photos.

ebay live auctions are pretty funky. I quit doing it. I believe you have to arrange your own shipping or if they do it you're slammed with excessive fees.

ebay does live auctions? Where have I been? This company is on auction zip I think. That's where I'm bidding from if I do. (Not interested in this coin though)

I have never seen this, live auctions with different lots on ebay? Does this happen often?

Anyone who would bid on this coin or any other 93-S not authenticated by a major TPG, is an absolute fool.

Well, it ended up going for $1,400 (which with that extra 23% works out to an actual $1,722).

Looking at other completed auctions it appears to be typical auction house results. People paying waaaayyy too much.

My sentiments exactly. You can't see any of the important details, so even if it appears to be genuine, there is no way to tell for sure. With a rare coin like this I would want to see it certified and in person.
