I am searching for a tiny "Yehud" silver coin with a human ear on one side and a falcon on the other. Before 333 BCE during Persian Period over Israel. Size approx. 6 mm. Anybody know of one for sale? I have a hole in my heart 'cause there is a hole in my collection till I find one...

Yes, thank you. I am very familiar with "Vcoins" and I own all of these "Yehud" types. But can't seem to locate the one with human ear...

When you say "ear" I'm not sure what you mean. Ear of grain? Meshorer illustrates a Yehud coin, type 8 and 8a, with a lily on the obverse and a spread wing Falcon on the reverse. Is that what you mean?
I did not see one of those on Vcoins.
Do you have a reference for the coin you seek? Maybe a Meshorer number?

MadMoneyMike correctly refers to a human ear and falcon. What he describes is a Hendin type 1061, an AR gerah, obverse: large ear, possibly representing the "Ear of God"; reverse: falcon with wings spread, head rt.

Bob L... that's EXACTLY correct. One was for sale years ago but very off-center (only partial ear made the strike) but haven't seen another since. Now I need it to complete my "Yehud" collection...

Bob, do you have a pic of that? Maybe a scan from your copy of Hendin. I only have the Hendin 3rd edition, and it wasn't in there yet. I'd like to see what he is calling a human ear.

Quote: Maybe a scan from your copy of Hendin. Will do, Irbguy...writing from work now, but will scan and post this evening. And, yes, it's in Hendin's latest (5th) edition.

Here's the scan from Hendin: And here's one I found online, from a 2014 auction...it was estimated at between $8,000 and $10,000, and ended up selling at $14,700!:

Thank you for that, Bob, especially the pic of an actual example. Not seen this before. It is an interesting form, but given the Jewish scruples against graphic representations of God, a la 2nd commandment (Jewish count), I have some doubt that it is meant to represent a divine ear, even if it is symbolic.
Then again, I do not know whether it was the Persians or the Judahites who were minting these in Jerusalem (or in some other Persian period mint.) I have heard conflicting reports on this.
Maybe you guys can bring me up to speed? If so, fire away.

I have no insights to offer. But, below the section I scanned, Hendin goes on to quote Gerson...I believe this must be Stephen N. Gerson, who has written articles on the coinage of Yehud:
"Gerson suggests that 'the ear has to do with the Shema prayer, bedrock of Jewish liturgy and ethical monotheism: 'Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.' This, then is the 'Shema coin.'"
Pretty speculative, but perhaps correct.
