This one came up a few months back. I don't recall the outcome though. Chips maybe?

I'm not sure about it. Doesn't Die Deterioration typically look rounded off and smear like? The features on this coin are really sharp.

Also, on that previous thread, the coin had heavy flow lines to suggest the VLDS, this one has none. It's exactly the same as the mint mark on that other coin so it's doubtful that this is machine damage either. Maybe they just jacked up the milling program for the mint mark for this particular die?

Could it be DDO? Normally the distortions are at the center of these modern coins but could this be as isolated to a peripheral device without distorting the nearby devices? I wouldn't think so but maybe it's something for our experts to hash out.

Hmmmm....interesting that it's come up three times this year. I hope one or more of the heavy weights weigh in on this. Thanks for the link Maineman.

If it were a DDO, then the other devices would be affected.

As suspected. Do you think we're looking at chips then?

I think it's just wear on the die. It can appear sharp like that sometimes.

It might be part of the post that forms the center of the mint mark chipping away slowly.

Very odd, same type of issue with this 1998 D dime. This means it probably is machine damage that is common when the D exists.

True, that little post that stands out in the center of the MM takes a beating.
