Hello guys I just received a few coins back from anacs , everything came back about as I expected with the exception of this 1898 Barber dime ... I know these photos aren't the best but with only a cell phone camera they are about as good as I can get .. So what would you guys grade this coin ?

I wouldn't be one bit surprised if they slabbed it "AU Details - Environmental Damage" due to the heavy carbon spotting on the reverse.
It's still a very nice coin.

Well unfortunally guys I wasn't able to get a clear enough photo to do the coin justice .. I thought without a doubt this was a unc coin that would grade 61 possibly 62. It's tough to tell by the photo but in hand the hair above Liberty's forehead is just as complete and sharp as any MS Barber dime I own . Before I ever submitted this coin I compaired it to an old anacs coin graded 60 and a pcgs 61 , this coin in my opinion looked as if it would be a easy 61. Anacs graded it AU 58 and that shocked me a bit as it doesn't show any wear above the forehead that I see on the au58 barbers I have ..

I think the reverse looks uncirculated but maybe they saw some breaks in the luster on the obverse that knocked it down to a 58. It is a little hard to tell from the picture but for example around the nose area and the leaves in the wreath/headband perhaps.
Sometimes a 58 can have more eye appeal than a 61 or 62, so it's not a total disappointment I hope because it is a beautiful coin overall.

I would agree with ANACS on this one.

58 sounds about right. Look for hairlines, not rub, on 58's. Hairlines are the first step of a coin being circulated. You can test this out with a cheap BU washie or something, throw it in your pocket for a day or two with other change, then pull it out and examine it. You likely will not see rub per se, unless you have a job with a lot of standing/walking. However, you will see hairlines on the high points, which indicates early-stage circulation.

AU58 is right on target. Your lucky you didn't get a Details grade! AU58 might actually be overgrade.

Well you guys may be right , I don't see many hairlines but there is a very small nick on the cheek .. Not sure what you guys are seeing that would warrant a details grade ? The toning on the reverse is a bit dark but in hand has more of a greenish blue tint rather than the dark black that it appears to be in the photo ... I've got several other barbers graded 58 and this is probably the sharpest one as far as detail and luster go, thats why I was sure it come in low MS...

P.S. - Next time, try to give us a little more time for input (2-3 days).

@ coin frog Normally I would have waited atleast overnight before posting what the coin was graded .. After posting and seeing the photos didn't give a accurate idea of what the coin looked like in hand I then went ahead and posted rather than wait a couple days just to hear opinions that were formed from photos that didn't do the coin justice .. I tried my best to get a decent photo but just couldn't do it with this phone .. The color is off a bit it makes the toning on the reverse seem really dark along with not being able to get one as clear as I'd liked .. Maybe I should look into investing into a good camera as it truly is frustrating not being able to show what a coin looks like in hand and to have to hear opinions based on poor photos .. Never the less I appericate everyone taking the time to reply ..
