Hi all,

I'm attempting to learn my doubles, but its taken quite a bit to do so. I thought that I had a pretty good knowledge of them, and then I received this one which has thrown me off guard completely. It appears to have shelf/machine/mechanical/etc doubling on some letters, but there are a few which just completely confuse me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What I am going to attempt to do is show each photo, and post my thoughts on each and why I came to which conclusion. I would greatly appreciate feedback on what I have wrong about it and how to prevent the mistaken identity in the future please :). Thank You!

In this photo, the "U" in United States looks to have a valley between the it. The N does as well on both sides of it. The rest of it appears normal.

This a view further down, the "U" and the "N" are the only letters that appear to have some sort of doubling from this view.

This is another view, and the "U" appears like a shelf here. The "N" still has what appears to be a valley. The "E" has a notable feature at the bottom of it, but it could be a scratch. The "M" at the top on the second smaller part of it at the top appears to have a spacing in it.

In this one, the bottom of the E and the side of the T definitely appear to be like a shelf.

And this is the rest of the lettering. It doesn't seem to be off except the S, but the S appears to have a lowered doubling from what I can see.

Any advice, tips, or tricks are very welcome :).

I think what you are seeing is called HUB reduction doubling. Though I may be mistaken. We will let someone more knowledgeable chime in.

Machine damage on wheat cents are often seen on the EPU. But at other times it affects other devices.

Note how the MD reduces the size of the devices?
Hub doubling enlarges them

Note how the overall size of the devices are enlarged.
The Dots on the EPU.
The wheat lines.
On machine damaged coins these devices are reduced in size.
