Poll Question
Just spent 30 minutes typing up this post and I accidentally deleted it. Arg!!

Anyway whats you're preference?

LCS/pawn shops in my experience can have a feast or famine effect, where theres too much stuff I want, or I walk out empty handed. Is more conducive to impulse buying, and generally no refunds. There aren't any good LCSs around me, so my experience is with pawn shops who sell junk silver

ebay seems to just have TOOO much stuff on it, and is hard to find a fair deal without searching for one specific coin for days/weeks, and trying to inspect pictures, return policies, etc for every single listing. Exhausting!

The only online dealer I've used is APMEX. The prices seem to be fair, but nothing is a "steal" of course, and they're customer service seems to be great, and I feel like ordering a "random BU Peace dollar" for instance, may yield me a better coin that trying to determined if a coin I'm looking at at a pawn shop on ebay is indeed the grade they claim it to be.

I have no experience with coin shows, but i'd imagine i'd have a similar problem with being overwhelmed, and not being focused on what I'm looking for.

I feel like I'm leaning towards online dealers. This way, I can buy some coins on a monthly basis, stay on a budget, and potentially spend the least amount of time acquiring some coins, whereas ebay could be the most time consuming, and pawn shops can be unpredictable.

Of course the best answer I'm sure is become an expert, and spend all your time at all three places looking for that specific coin but I need to find some balance between shopping, buying, and maintaining my collection.

Poll Choices
  ebay
 LCS
 Pawn Shop
 Online Dealer
 Coin Shows
 Auction houses

Yes, there needs to be a choice for coin shows, where dealers compete and you win!

You should update the title to be clear that you are polling about 'buying' coins.

There also needs to be a poll for major auction houses.

Thank you for the updates. I voted coin shows. I gave the reason earlier.

Coin Shows for me too. I use to buy on ebay and still do a LITTLE bit but after reading my first month here about altered / faked coins I am a bit shy of the bay unless it is an exceptional seller with awesome feedback in the coin category. My LCS is "ok", but they are only open 10:30 to 1:30 on Saturdays and don't put nice stuff out then. Only plain junky stuff and I work through the week so weekdays are not an option. I like shopping at coin shows best!

I did not vote. CCF is not included.

In addition, the last place I would buy a coin is ebay.

I've never been to a major coin show .but I do very well at the small local shows. usually always able to pick up what I want at a good price. I used to buy a lot of coins through e-bay, but got tired of inferior coins. I only have one LCS in my area usually high priced and charge tax. I stay completely away from online dealers especially if they don't show photos of their coins.

I haven't voted yet because I'm having a difficult time choosing. I get lots of small to medium size purchases on ebay that I'm happy with, lots of varying purchases at my LCS, and like coin shows and auction houses for larger purchases. All (most) of the above, I suppose.
Rest in Peace

I prefer the seller as opposed to where they sell. In other words, dealer X might have a web presence and sell directly via that service, also sell on ebay, and CCF!. They might even have such "old" clientele that they still mail out a yearly price list to old customers. They may sell at local and national shows too.

Auction houses can certainly be a great place to buy if you are after more valuable coins. I can't tell how many times I've watched ebay for months for a particular coin in a particular grade only to end up buying it from a Heritage auction and actually getting it for less (including postage and buyers fees) than any offering on ebay.

The seller, not where they sell, is what keeps me going back.

I live in an area with few coin stores (1) and very few coin shows so I buy mostly on ebay. When I buy Certified coins it's very easy of course but buying raw coins can be hit or miss.

Coin shows for me; I do not buy coins online, so coin shows give the most variety of what I can buy.
