Someone was asking me questions about a certain '81 variety, so I went through all mine to see what was what. The variety (if it should be called one) is with an adjustment/alignment mark at the D in Dei. These same type marks are also found on 1858 5, 10, & 20 cent pieces (and other denominations), but on the I in Dei instead of the D. I think that they were for aligning the dies to the presses or aligning the dies in the keepers or catches. This was the auction in question and it's over: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canada-1881...047675.l2557Regardless, on the old CCRS site we hoarders and large collectors would put out a call to get populations from what everyone had and then we could get a read on scarcities. That's what I'm doing now. We also did this on the CCC site where I was the moderator. There are at least 2 Reverses that this was married to. Can you all get me a count of what you found. I looked through 157 of mine and have my count. Thanks

Wow! You guys are luckier than I am .. I only got 1 in 157, but I never knew they existed and, for years, I thought that I was the only one who knew about some of the real scarcities. Ok, we are getting there. A total of 300 should give us a pretty good pop %.

Interesting, I don't have any 1881's but will keep a look out for sure.

Please correct me if I am wrong. I believe Jack Griffin had this listed as Gr-91h Rarity 6. But only referenced the closed V due to the die break.

There is no GR-91h in the original Griffin work. Charlton made a reprint (with added material) of the original work and published it as Monograph 1. That reprint edition is riff with errors through the entire book. Many (and in some dates 50% or more) of the photos do not match the thumbnails or phtos. DO NOT use the monograph 1 to try to prove anything. We (the group who wrote the 2100 variety section for Charlton on Large Cent varities) sent in an entire corrected Monograph 1 to Charlton who have not published it yet until all the old bad ones are sold. Many of the new, added entries had to be removed, some proven false, and many many that had to have phtos rematched with the correct verbiage. My coin with that Obverse mark is married to a verified GR-91 (R-8) Reverse. Most others that I have now heard from have the phot'd/pictured Reverse from the auction.

Bill, these are pretty common, I have at least 12 of them. The grade of the coin is quite nice.
