Hi, prices having been drooping on the 2009 ultra high relief double eagles lately to the point I'm going to jump in. M69 is fine for me but the differences in PCGS labels is somewhat perplexing, especially since there doesn't seem to be much of a price difference between the variants.

I've found 5 variants and would love to hear comments on which is the one to buy. I can only assume the PL (proof like) is more desirable. And a shiny gold foil label HAS to be more desirable too. But I kind of like the old fashion blue label.

Anyways, thoughts on the different labels would be appreciated,

Thurmond

If it were me, I would buy the COIN I liked the best regardless of what label is in the slab.

The TPG utilize the various labels to increase their revenue stream....back in 2009 one of these could have been "more desirable" fast forward several years later and for the most part no one cares about the label.

I agree in principle but I can't tell one MS69 apart from another MS69. And I have to assume that the PL designation must mean something (am I naive?). And if it doesn't mean anything as to the condition of the coin, it may mean something, if I ever sell it.

You're right that PL means proof-like. Generally, the first several coins struck with new or highly polished dies will have the appearance of being proof or proof like. As the dies strike more coins that fades.

I would suggest watching the sold listings and see if the PL sell for more than non PL examples.

I propose this: post a picture of the coin only and label them 1-5 and the put an A-E on the label pics you posted and lets play a game of match the coin to the label.

Or if all of the coins have sold post a final sales price 1-5 and the labels A-E and we can play a game of buy the label, not the coin

Are you looking at the coins in person or on the internet? If on the internet, then I'm not surprised. If in person, you just need to look for flaws. Remember that the smallest imperfection can drop a coin to 69. That said, I've seen plenty of 69's that I wouldn't buy and have seen some 70's that are not perfect to me. The PL designation is more desirable, but if you can't see the difference yourself, don't waste your $$$ on another's opinion. The best value might be a coin that was borderline PL, but didn't get the designation.
