Can't sleep, so what better thing to think about .. coins.

It has always bugged me that the mint put out
10th Anniversary set in 1995
20th Anniversary set in 2006
25th Anniversary set in 2011

I understand that the 1995 ASE is the 10th coin put out,
in that series. But to me that is not how they normally
put out commemorative coins. To me the 10th Anniversary
should have been dated 1996.

For example the 250th anniversary Washington half dollar
was not put out in 1981 (GW born 1732)

Then a I go to wondering .. I do that. Did history repeat
itself, or did someone in the decision process create the
rarest ASE, the 1995 W, because the rarest Morgan dollar is the 1895.

But then, what am I thinking. Would a government official
actually create a rare valuable coin on purpose?

I also wonder if there are any records kept on how many
of these rare coins end up in the hands of those making
the decisions about coin mintages.

Makes me think about the 1894 S dime.

I should stop thinking about things like this at 5 O'clock
in the morning .. makes my head hurt sometimes.

Wow GR. Your midnight insight is blowing my silver dollar mind. Could it be that the ASE was authorized or first struck in 85 and released in 86. Then they followed the release year for 20 & 25... I really like the morgan hypothesis though!

Yesterday at 3 in the morning I was thinking about the best conundrum:

Which came first: The chicken or the egg?

I spent about 45 minutes thinking about it, which wound up being useless anyways, because I spent 45 minutes, devised a theory, then got lost in my thoughts. So I lost 45 minutes of my life.

Cascade ... I had not thought about, if the ASE's were minted in 85,
then released 86.

Trying to remember, seems like we were waiting for them to come
out, well into 86. I am thinking by the time I seen my first 86's,
I was seeing ... And buying the 87's not much later.

I was just speculating. If thry were made in 86 maybe it had to do with the law authorizing them. Maybe Conder101 knows but you might have to pm him the link to this because I don't see him in here that much

Yea ... It would be nice to know the real answer...

I guess I am curious ... If others see the odd way the mint did
the 10th anniversary set.

It doesn't really matter .... I just find it interesting.

The rooster, and then he crowed about it every morning ever since.

Was there a set released in 1995? I only see 2006 and 2011 in the Red Book.

Only if you include the 10th anniversary gold Eagle set with the Silver 1995 W Proof Eagle that was unique to the set.

They combined the gold and silver anniversary set in one.

Ah! That is how I missed it. I do not do gold.

Still odd, calling it a tenth anniversary set.

And at only 30k mintage, the 1995 W Proof is by far the key issue to ASEs.

Yes...1995 W the most expensive ASE so far. I think the last
one I seen, at my LCS, sold for around $3000.00. That was
for just the silver ASE.

It is the only silver Eagle I don't have.

The 2012 and 2013 sets do not really fit into the point I was trying to make.

The point was, why did the mint make the 10th anniversary set
in 1995'?

Based on other Anniversary sets, it should have been put out in 1996.

There's probably an answer out there, but I suspect it would be difficult to dig up without talking to the U.S. Mint marketing folks from 20 years ago. Maybe marketing just messed up and missed the actual 20th anniversary and thought they could still leverage that magic number with the logic that 1986 + 20 = 2006.

Or the 20th and 25th Anniversary sets should have come out in 2005 and 2010 since the 10th set was first (and correct)...

Ok, so it wasn't correct, but it was first.
