"Officers PALMER and VAN BUREN, of the Eighth Precinct Police, made the arrest yesterday of JAMES KELLEY, and his wife MARY KELLEY, for passing a package of counterfeit cents at the store of EDWARD F. NEISE, No. 307 Spring-street. The officers then proceeded to the residence of the prisoners at No. 184 Elizabeth-street, where they found nine sets of dies, together with a quantity of material for making bogus United States coin. There were also fifty-six bad pennies ready made. The parties are held for examination."

So there are also counterfeit pennies floating around out there to watch out for. I would assume that they were small cents, because the mint had discontined the large cents due to costs.

Wow. A lot of work for a time when copper wasn't even legal tender and could be refused for payment!

Basically any coin past and present has or will be counterfeited. This is why a lot of people like TPG. The counterfeiters have caught on to that and are now making counterfeit coins in counterfeit slabs. The more you think about it the scarier it gets.

That was a pretty cool article though. I had to look at the date because for a second I was like arrested for pennies?
