These two coins came from that same group of 100 IHPs I bought about a week and a half ago. These were my first IHP purchases, so I don't have great coins yet...gotta pick the best of the worst at this point. The one on the right was the best 1908 I saw in the bunch, so I put it in the book. The one on the left was covered in crusty crud, but I saw a little potential in it, so I decided to soak it in olive oil for a few days before reselling it along with the rest of the rejects. I fully understand the ramifications of cleaning, but (1) the "best" 1908 coin in the bunch appeared to have already been cleaned, and (2) the coin was already ruined with gack and going to be resold, so I didn't care if I ruined it further. All I did was soak it in olive oil...no other "cleaning" of any kind. I took it out of the oil today, and the oil did wonders on it...it actually came out looking pretty decent. Now I don't know whether to keep it or not. The one on the right has clearly been cleaned by somebody, but it has better details than the one on the left. The one on the left has fewer details and more scrathes, but much nicer toning and a better rim. The reverse is far superior on the one on the right. So which one is the keeper (until I find something better)? The one with less detail or the one that has better detail but looks like it's been severely polished? the one on the left the right one has too many surface marks that take away from the appeal of its grade

The one on the left looks a million times better to me. Looks like it also has a better strike

I'd also keep the one on the left. Too many nicks on the right one.

They look Olive Oiled, I'd give them a quick soak in acetone and then decide. Case and point...check out the before and after of my 09 cent. https://goccf.com/t/21533

I'm glad most of you like the one on the left better, because I do too. I'm not sure if the one on the right was olive-oiled. It's exactly as I received it. I'll try dipping the one on the left once I get some good acetone. The only stuff I have in the house now is nail polish remover and I'm not messing with that.
I should have taken a "before" shot on that one on the left. It was covered in green and yellow crust. It was totally gross and the only reason I even attempted the olive oil was because I could tell that at least part of LIBERTY was still visible.
Nelrak - Where did you get that 1909 for $4? What a great deal. It's a beautiful penny!

My #1 and #2 set 1931-S lincolns are so close that I keep moving them back and forth, I just can't decide. However, I enjoy the process so my suggestion is keep them both . Jim

I would keep BOTH. Because of the relatively low cost of these coins, each coin gives you another grading reference point to use on other examples. I keep multiple examples of same dates so that when I decide to upgrade, I review those duplicate coins for that date before I buy the upgrade. This strategy has help me make more informed decisions and was a valuable (and Costly!)lesson. With that said, if it came down to choosing one coins I would NOT select the one on the right because of the contact marks. Nice IHP's without marks are hard to find in all grades and dates

I agree I would keep both. The one on the right although more marked has slightly less wear IMO.
