Hi forum, as you might notice this is my first post. I came here looking for answers to this question but see nothing on the topic of recent in the forum at least, so I will try to phrase the question.

As you may or may not be aware the 1922 penny has 3 varieties.
Wide date variety. Wide date toenail nine variety. Plain variey.
Images of next.

Plain variety.

My question - is the only way to tell these apart to line the physical coins up and then gauge the 2 wide date varieties as wider than the plain, and the toenail wide date variety as having that tiny bit longer 9?

I think there was an article about the 1922 penny varieties in a recent Coin and Banknote Magazine article (and I think there were more than three varieties).
I think the trick is to hold a piece of straight paper against the front or back of some of the date digits and see whether they cross through a bead or not.

Not only do different emcees in the numerals but also there are flat and curved based lettering. Also English and Indian obverse so.
There are a number of different date position varieties with several each of wide and extra wide dates. Several exist with the toenail.

In my opinion there are 5 basic core groups, with at least four of these groups comprising of multiple examples.
