I just received my CherryPickers Guide volume II.
I'm confused about the DD. Is it something you can see with the naked eye? I am using a 5x magnifier that I bought from my LCS, do I need something stronger? And are these varieties very rare?

They vary in rarity. Most of the common ones lived a full die life and are more common than others. But for example, the 1969 S DDO-001 is very rare as not many were struck. Probably because of how prominent the doubling was. There are only a handful of DDs that you can see with the naked eye. Those are usually the very valuable ones. A 5X loupe will not cut it. A 10-20X loupe would be a lot better for some of the varieties.

So should I just be searching for the ones that I can see with the naked eye?

With too much magnification, you may see something, when it is too minor to be collectable. I would think the 10X and 16X loupes would be strong enough. Too little magnification will allow some doubled dies to be missed. But the stronger the doubling on the coin the better. Some of the 1972 DDO coins are found in all die states. Others in just the earlier die states. (possibly the doubling was noticed and the dies were retired) Proof doubled dies are more valuable as they only strike 3000 coins with those dies. So if there is strong doubling on a proof coin and the run was complete for those dies, only 3,000 would exist. If they were noticed, then the dies would have a shorter life. So having one of these would limit the number of collectors to have one with the lower numbers struck)
