Machine damaged. Notice the "BER" on LIBERTY, the tops of those devices are reduced in size because of the machine damage on those devices. The coin was struck with a normal die and the MD damaged these devices by die movement during the strike. On a doubled die the devices are hub doubled on the die. Thus the term Doubled Die.

Thank you Coop. So it's nothing, I kind of figured that but wanted to make sure.
What is the glow stuff around the rim?

The dies are both LDS/VLDS. (Late Die State/Very Late Die State) So there is a lot of die flow present on the fields. The reverse one is real consistant between the large devices on the reverse. Blue color? Paint/magic marker/or something else looks like was colored.

I believe that 'glow' is created when the die is slightly convex, leaving the coin's field concave. I'll let coop correct me on that, though.

Are we talking about the blue glow? If so it was some added to the coin. Note how under the jaw the color is missing. Indicating that it originally was not there and something was added. (like a blue magic marker?)

I was talking about the reflective/lustrous area in a ring through the outer legends.

Coop is it possible the blue is from the reflection of the light? I have a box that I've used to try to stop the glare and it's blue? I don't remember if I had used it when taking pictures of this but tomorrow I'll look back at some of the other pictures and see if that blue was always there. Maybe that will help?
I got to go to bed the pillow is screaming my name but I'll look first chance tomorrow if that would help.

That is die flow. The die is showing its age. (kind of like wrinkles to us)

I was also thinking that the blue color may just be the lighting. It's only present in some pictures.

I just saw that, thank you numisma. To me it looked like snow flakes or or a fuzz around the ring on the front and back. It was different then I've seen before. I couldn't figure it out.

I just went back and looked at some of the pictures and it had to be me with the blue box (which is now going in the trash) Sorry about that. I also just noticed I missed Coop's last comment about the die flow. It now makes sense to me. Thank you Coop.
