Hi members.! Just joined yesterday as I have had this coin for a while and never bothered to check and while I got bored looked and saw copper on the rim a week back.

I thought it was plated and ignored it and again just two day earlier got curious and scraped it off with a knife and can see copper particles on my hands and the coin is definitely not plated on the rim with copper as I scraped even more on the rim and it's copper.

Thought I would ask members here as I have no idea being in Australia and first time seeing a US coin like this.

Any help appreciated. thanks.

Hope the photo will come through clear.

That is merely deterioration, or wear. It's been handled so much that the copper is now wearing against the rim.

Now about the copper, Clad coins are "sandwich" coins, the nickel is the bread, and the copper is the meat. About 80% of the copper you see on the side is copper all the way through.

It is a clad coin. Layers of nickel on the outside with copper in the center layer.
