While looking though a pile of old coins, I found this. Any info on it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I know the coin is worn.   |

Hi
It is not William and Mary.
There is one or two known Cu 1693 the rest are 1694.
I would suggest yours is a blundered 1700 strike William.
It could be 1695-99 though...maybe 1699.

Then why is it stamped 1690?

That is 1696 not 1690. The top of the 6 is inside the line beneath Britannia. Also, a William and Mary coin would have a portrait of William AND Mary. There is no Mary in this coin, so again, not 1690. Also, in 1690, no copper coins were struck, only Tin. This doesn't look like Tin. And where in the world do you see 'Et Maria' on this coin? I see the T in Tertivs not the E in Et.

I stand corrected! Thanks for the knowledge. My first impressions were from the interweb photos. I'm a newb. Hard to tell since it's so worn. But from what you have told me, I now see what you've pointed out. So is this a rare coin?

I can't dismiss from my mind that the Peter1234 suggestion may be correct: that it is a blundered date by the Mint. The date looks like '1690', which is a date for Willianm and Mary coinage.
The closed loops on the '6' and '9' and the '0' and their positional relationships to each other suggest '1690', to my eye, at least.
Interesting and perhaps a rare variety, and should be worth something, despite the poor condition.

sel is extremely knowledgeable and I don't like to contradict him but to my eye it looks like 1696. To me it looks like the last digit takes the same form as the second one... but my opinion is no more informed than anyone elses...

For a start as I said it is NOT 1690.
It is a standard date in exurge Willie farthing 1695-1700.
The mint workers at this time were mainly Dutch and the craftwork was disgraceful many couldn't spell and cast coins would slip through.
A few years previously we were using quality Swedish copper blanks until the Tin miners of Cornwall pushed tin coins.
These were plugged with copper.
The tin farthings rotted faster than a 70's British Leyland car parked on a cliff top.
To put this one to bed it is a naff Willie cu farthing.

Just to put all this into perspective often the dates were cut off in minting and Brit's head often was missing.
A nightmare collecting period.

Love your posts and look at you as one of our top boys.
My coin collecting started when I was 4 (50 years ago)
We need your expertise on other forums.
Coincomm is a fantastic resource.
I have a few Aussie buddies (my Aunt is a £10 pom)
I've said it before and repeat again there are 24/7 friends out there.
I tragically lost my wife just over 2 weeks ago and closure is on Tuesday.
I will be posting a few pictures on my main forum and maybe put a few up here.
We are just names on forums but some of the support I have received has really helped.
