I've had this note in my collection for many years and finally just had to ask about the 'nearly invisible' serial number. The scan doesn't do justice but there is FAINT red ink where the serial number should be. Question is how do I tell if it's legitimate underinking or chicanery by someone trying to create an error? Thanks.

Huh. I doubt this is underinking, as it appears faded. I think your other idea may be correct.

Looks like it's been chemically removed.
No way this would have been done at CBN Co.

The note just didn't make sense to me; oh well for a total cost of $1 (US) I'll keep it as a conversation piece.
Thanks for the replies.

My first impression was to agree, as I've seen ink removed from other bills.
But I have to wonder what method was used to remove the ink evenly and with zero trace of smudging or disturbance to any of the surrounding areas even under heavy magnification.

Can't they use laser light to treat skin and bleach out marks or tattoos.

Maybe someone tried that here..Maybe some colours when using laser light respond better than other colours and I'm thinking that red responds well to laser light..

Just a guess on my part..

Well, I've had it for over 20 years so just wasn't sure what techniques could have been used. Another question for the ages and future generations. I'd send it to a TPG and maybe they would reject it and tell me why but that's too many $$$ for what looks to probably be a non-CBNCo issue. I do appreciate all the opinions and insights. Reckon I'll just be confused.

The other thing I thought of..
Silly putty in the 1960s used to be great at removing the inks of the day. Maybe it didnt work to good on bills except for the serial numbers.

Different things can happen when an old bill got washed in the laundry, especially if the water contained a lot of bleach. If the bill appears limp and flimsy, that's quite possibly why the serial number is missing.

It doesn't really look like it went through the wash, but I suppose it's possible.

i don't think it was removed, the wavy lines underneath look like they weren't touched. like pennyman said "no smudging or disturbance" it is a funky one for sure

As pennyman07 said: "Silly putty in the 1960s used to be great at removing the inks of the day. Maybe it didnt work to good on bills except for the serial numbers." Now if I can find some I may try it on an OLD bill. My young 'uns loved that stuff.

You can still see traces of the numbers, no doubt they were bleached or something

i don't think it was silly putty, you can see the even wavy lines under the seven and in the middle of the next number.

How many digits is the SN supposed to have? It looks like 1240471.
