I bought these items at auction tonight and I am wondering how I did. It seemed great at the time, but I am starting to second guess myself. 1847 Large Cent (nice details) 14.00 1921 Mercury dime (good-4?) 30.00 1917 T1 Standing Liberty quarter (EF) 31.00 These are the only three I am questioning. Please let me know what you think. Edited by philney 01/19/2008 3:39 pm

1847 cent: assuming there is little to no corrosion and its not a flat disc with a little detail, you did very well. 1921 dime: how did you manage that?! even if its an AG, thats a good value. 1917 quarter: double check the grade of this one. a lot of SL quarters are overgraded in the midrange grades because of a jump in value between vf and xf. you did well for this one either way. good job!

I think you did exceptionally well....extraordinarily exceptional, even. If you check the Red Book, numismedia.com and pcgs.com, you'll see. Jim

I say that sounds pretty good. I do have a question about the g Mercury dime though. Can you read the 1 clearly on the front or no? I was at shriners yesterday and they have ag/g Mercury dimes for like 25-40 bucks depending but all of them at that grade you can hardly read the 1 in the date.

1921 Mercury dime for $30? Run back there and get as many as possible for that price. WOW! Nice. I go to coin shows all the time and the Mercury dimes are exceptionally high in prices and that 1921 is way up there lately. Again, nice deals. I edited this to say in reality you may have basically gotten the other two almost free considering what the 21 Merc would sell for.

I am posting the pics here. I can see the 1 on the merc, but only the top half. I am not sure how good the pics will look, but here they are. I bought these at our coin club meeting. There was a 1916D Merc there but the starting bid was 400 and I had already spent too much. I wish I had paid attention and I would have a 1916D instead of my fourth 1921. Can have a look see at the reverse of the Merc ?
from the obverse the coin is an AG-3 having the rim, lettering, bust and date blended.

Here is the reverse of the 21 Merc. I checked the others and they all have the full 1, but this one only has about half showing. I knew I should have let it go. I just have so few keys and semi-keys that I jump on them when I get the chance. Image: KENS056.jpg28.07 KB

There's nothing wrong with that Philney because you can always upgrade later.
As for the 1921 Merc it is AG-3 with the reverse possibly a fair 2 given that One and United are all but gone.
I think it would probably grade out at AG-3.

Check that coin real good for a D mint mark ,, with that much rim gone its possible only a very small amount of the MM would be visable ,, if it is the D it would substantially improve the value even for an AG-3 example.
