This is a coin that was found by my father in the California hills. I know it is in very bad shape, but maybe someone on here has an idea of what it is and some history about it?

A common enough cast cash coin - my identification is necessarily sketchy because of the poor condition of the specimen, but I believe it dates to the reign of Emperor Jen Tsung (1796-1820) and was produced by the Board of Works mint. As such, it may well have been lost way back in the gold rush era, but of course that's sheer conjecture on my part.

Qian Long Tong Bao. It was probably brought by some Chinese immigrant to the Western US prior to the 1880's when the Chinese Exclusion Act was in place.

Such a fascinating piece of history and story of finding it. It's a keeper for that reason alone in my book, but won't be paying too many bills with it.
