I'm just looking for ideas, experiences and strategies that people have(if willing to share). I completeley understand if you dont. Aswell as how do you ship them? I roll them up then secrue with tape and pack with whatever I have avaliable to fill the empty space and limit the noise to protect against theft of trained ears, in the shipping process. Also your marketing strategies. Anything else you would like to add that I didnt ask would be great!

Just look up coin shows, go to one and ask dealers to buy them from you. That way no postage, lost in mail, etc., just cash.

I would love to go to a coin show. However, transportation, and timing are big issues there with my day job, and I dont have a car.

Selling copper cents now is like selling 90% silver coins back in 1966. You'll get a fraction of what these will be worth in a few years.
Seems that at todays depressed copper prices, any profit you make will be eaten up in shipping costs.

Yeah either cash them in for face or stash them away. I truly do think they will go up in value but who knows how much and when that will be. Right now even if you found a local buyer the most you'd get is 1.5x face and that profit would probably be lost driving to meet someone. If you sell on ebay you won't make much of anything after fees and shipping.

I sell on ebay mostly Morgan and Peace dollars. Quality photos and accurate description will help your coins sell. I list the positive, but I also list the negative, so the buyer is not surprised.

I am done with the auction starting price of 99 cents as I have been burnt a couple of times where the item sold for much less than the value. If I use the auction listing, I list the least starting amount that I am willing to take for the item.

On items from $100 to $299, I will ship Priority Mail because the post office is much more diligent handling these packages, than, first class packages. On items over $300, I will require a signature from the buyer upon delivery.

When you do your packing, make it look professional as you are more likely to get a return buyer.

Since copper is down considerably I've heard from other collectors that they are not having much luck selling pre-1982 copper cents. It might be possible to find a buyer offering slightly over face but shipping/insurance costs would likely consume any profits. There used to be a fairly active copper searchers forum that is now mostly empty due to the low price of copper making copper hoarding not very viable at this time.

Well I saw 10 dollars of pre 1982 pennies go for 50 bucks on ebay earlier this week! the fees couldnt have eaten too much of that could they? Plus the shipping was around 6.50. I agree on waiting but I want to reduce my invetory, (to make a possible move easier). Over the past year ive accumulated atleast 200 dollars in copper pennies I really should start logging my finds. not that anyone would really be that interested in copper penny numbers.

How do you store/organize your pennies?

...at least I am not the fool paying 5X face for bronze cents thinking I will be able to sell them for scrap copper prices.

I may well be a fool, but there are a few things I know. Among them are...

1. It is illegal to buy or sell United States cents for the purpose of reclaiming the metals

2. Pre 1982 United States cents are not copper but a high grade bronze

3. Scrap copper is purchased in grades often as #1 and #2 which are far below the listed spot price. Bronze and Brass are purchased at even less.

So even if legal to sell them for scrap the spot price would need to be somewhere around 8 or 10 times face to make buying bronze cents at 5X face profilable.

So in this reality "10 dollars of pre 1982 pennies go for 50 bucks"
is foolishness.

I think you can do a 70 pound flat rate box for 5.75 , not bad. That's a lotta cents.

Tryna, I've read most of those things before, and I agree. I passively save copper cents I come in contact with, but I don't really hoard. What you said about pre '82 cents being bronze is interesting though, could you elaborate?

oops, that was a dumb question considering theres google:

Brass - is mainly an alloy that consists of copper with zinc added. Brasses can have varying amounts of zinc or other elements added. These varying mixtures produce a wide range of properties and variation in color. Increased amounts of zinc provide the material with improved strength and ductility. Brass can range in color from red to yellow depending on the amount of zinc added to the alloy.

So the 5% zinc in a pre '82 cent takes the scrap value down a notch or two? I've seen some videos on youtube of guys making copper bars from copper cents (which of course is illegal). I'm not sure if the melting it burns off any of the zinc but I thought it was interesting. It'll be interesting to see what happens if they ever lift the melting ban

Saving 95% copper cents is for the long term. No one is going to get rich from them now. My goal is more to save them from eventual melting. I do not really pay much attention to the dates or varieties now. It will give me and or my son something to do in the future.
