http://www.calgarynumismaticsociety.org/So last night, I might have met one of the nicest guys ever.
Last night I attended for the first time the Calgary Numanistic Society (aka: Calgary coin club) montly meeting;
I met this great guy named Bob.
He came with sleeves of coins that drew me his direction for what I jokingly called "show & tell";
I ended up sitting beside this guy, and while the order of the meeting was going on, he offered, so I flipped through his coins;
I guess every meeting has a theme, and members are encouraged to bring up something to share with the group, and when Bob made his way up there, he started out with something akin to:
Quote:
My name is Bob, and I don't collect any of the modern Canadian garbage.
This affirmed that I liked the guy.
I have told myself that I would stop collecting currency in this age of worthless steel everything - but I keep allowing myself to get sucked in (but I do at least not collect more than one example, and one spare of each)...
Back to thumbing through his sleeves of coins, there were a couple Victorian large cents I was mildly interested in, but I did buy two (AU?) 1965 pennies, and a 1947 Newfoundland penny.
Then there was this Canadian
Half Cent that jumped out at me.
I asked what he would want for it, to which he told me what he had into it - I expected a "steep" price (as compared to the stuff I normally buy), so I told him I'd think about it, and went back to looking.
I bought said pennies, and was intrigued by a couple Weimar 5pf coins - but that
Half Cent drew me back.
I happened to have a business card with me, so I wrote my home number on the back and asked if he would consider holding it for me so that I might buy it at the next meeting - because I simply didn't have that much money on me (I went there not expecting to buy anything).
Then Bob surprised me;
He asked me how much I had on me, I showed him the contents of my wallet, and how one of the bills (which was actually spoken of earlier in the meeting) was one I was kind of wanting to hold on to - so not only did I physically not have enough for his
Half Cent on me, but I (on a technicality) only had roughly half of what he had into the coin on me.
Then in a rare (in my life) stroke of generosity, Bob said that he would sell it to me for what I had in my wallet (less the one bill)!?
I had offered to bring more money next meeting, but he insisted that he was happy to help out another collector.

In my opinion this coin speaks for itself.
Now going forward, how will I manage to slip Bob some more money without him noticing(?) - or would it be an insult to try to do this?
(I doubt I will ever be able to reciprocate, and he reiterated before leaving that he didn't want any more money.)
For next meeting, I need to make sure to come with a little more money, and be sure to pay dues,
BEFORE getting myself into trouble.
