I believe they were hand punched in to the die, if so than the spacing and height of the number will always vary depending on which die the coin came from. if the dies were hand punched then there will be differences provided this date of cents was struck with more than one reverse die for the year.

No, you will find the seven all over the place high, low, right or left as the last digit was hand punched separately.
Cheers, Bill

Yes, they were all over and there are some very nice R/P's as well for the date. I like the '87's.
Whoops ... I misread the date. I thought that it was an 1887, not a '97. The last digit was handpunched, so they move around, but nothing like the '87's. The '97 R/P's have some small offsets, but still nothing like the '87's.

I guess it was neat times at the mint when the pressman can repunch clean up dies for the next batch of production

Quote: I found an 1888 with no N in CENT. So it just says 'ONE CET'? Also, were the first three digits hubbed or punched by hand?

Oh, I thought you meant that the letter was missing altogether, with no space between the E and T. Still interesting, though.

Now, there must have been a teenage craze way back where the large cents of any date had the E in cent manually maipulated (sometimes very crudely and childishly so) into a "U". Is that what yours is or does it look like a filled die?
