I got these two UN Sou tokens for three bucks each at a garage sale and I've tried to do online research but my head is spinning a little bit... Can anybody let me know what varieties these are and what if any value they may have? They both have medal alignment and the last three letters of "Montreal" seems to be pretty seriously doubled... Thanks for any help!

The left one is easy. The Banque de People legend of that style has to be LC5A. Only question is whether the wreath at the top touches or not. Hard to tell from the photo but I think so. So LC5A3 likely. A common one if so. If the top of the wreath does not have leaf points connecting then a real keeper. The other: start with the reverse legend, then narrow it down with the stuff in the wreath. Looks like LC32B. Unfortunately also a common one. You can probably get your money out on ebay, but you won;t make too much I don't think. |

I agree with the Charlton identifications.
Low grade / common
p.s. The wreath is closed.
The open wreath has a die break joining the T & U in AGRICULTURE.

Thanks for the die marker on that one. I have spent quite a bit of time with a magnifying glass trying to determine whether the little points were disconnected due to wear or were really disconnected!

This series is not by area of expertise and I do not know
whether legitimate open wreaths exist absent the die-break.

sorry, not the die crack marker between T & U,
rather the stem that joins the 2 leaves at the top of the wreath.
I'm guessing that the die started out as an open wreath and then cracked at an early stage of use, causing the wreath to "close" (hence the rarity of the open wreath)?
or were there multiple dies used?

Nice open wreath!. And for the record here is a picture of a higher grade closed wreath. I don't think the closed wreath is a die crack. Sorry its not a better photo.  |

I was hoping that Doug, the token guru, along with Al out East would chime in. They are the ones that can tell you about the tokens. Doug will wade through the 100's that he has and then check his references and you'll have an answer that you can primarily count on.
