I took a vacation day today and went back to the woods along the Milwaukee River just north of Milwaukee, WI, the spot where I found two silver dimes a couple of weeks ago.

I worked my way through the woods along the river. It was hard work, having to climb over and under downed trees, working up and down muddy banks and dealing with vines that constantly snagged my detector's coil.

However, it was worth it. I found a 1963-D Washington quarter on a narrow path right by the river. It rang up as a 50 cent piece on my ACE-250, a signal I never get, so I dug it up very carefully.

When I popped it out I thought it was a clad quarter, but then looked at the date and saw it was toned silver. It was my first silver quarter in nearly two years.

I found a twelve coin pocket spill from the 1960s and 1970s in the middle of the woods, and numerous other coins, including a 1956-D Wheatie.

I also stumbled across and bottle dump by an old railroad bridge. There were broken bottles all over the place in the woods, some of them looking rather old.

Here's the Washington as it came out of the ground.

That's strange ,silver doesn't come out of the ground looking so dark like that. must of been the combination of mud and water. I once found a 1930-P SLQ in an old school yard many years ago, it came out of the ground clean and original color.

I haven't found a silver coin toned like this either. Around here they are always (at least on those rare occasions when I find them), bright silver when you pull them out of the ground.

This was just a few feet from the shore of the river. I can imagine that it's spent time under water when the river is high.

It was in dirt, but there is clay just a few feet away.
