I've had mixed success buying numismatics (as opposed to bullion) from APMEX. This coin cost $145 and was shipped to me as "1921 Peace, XF". I'd somehow thought it would be slabbed. It isn't.

I'm unsure about both the grade and the integrity of the surfaces. seems like it might have had a light cleaning some time ago.

Any thoughts?

XF details, cleaned. Send it back, you can get an AU cheaper from ebay or the like.

That blotch above the eagle is enough for a details grade alone. Back she goes

You can buy a AU58 PCGS on ebay for less than $200. If you purchased the coin site unseen, it is not a good practice as AMPEX sells a lot of coins site unseen.

APMEX is not the place to go for numismatic coins. They are a good bullion house though.

Agree APMEX not good for collector coins, but I find their bullion prices generally high as well.

Yea sending back the coin is smart. Peruse buy it now or best offer deals for certified 21 Peace dollars some prices will be surprisingly fair.

When they ( APMEX) started off in Edmond OK as a small friendly, local coin shop they were pretty good with grading and prices.

Ever since they became a conglomerate, Internet "powerhouse" that all went out the window. An example is your coin.

The coin had a hard life. It is really nicked and does not look good to me. You could do better and get one in AU for a little bit more. It makes a difference because many AU coins do retain some luster and your 1921 looks battered and bruised. You bought in good faith and got some less than EF IMO.

Wow I always knew their prices were higher but I can't believe they tried to pass off a details coin as XF like that. As others have said you should return it and keep shopping around.
