I bought out a store years ago that sold Nascar diecast, ball cards and coins. I was putting in a gift shop that specialized in children's toys. While we were in there trying to get the place in some sort of shape,a guy walked in there asking if the lady with the coin shop had moved.
He told me he was trying to sell some things to her and that he had to have at least 75.00 out of it. Now I was a passive collector at best at this time and had never even looked at a price guide. I just kept any neat stuff I would find like bicentennial quarters and that stuff. So when I looked at this guy's stuff I knew that I wanted it, but told him I couldn't afford to spend 75.00 on coins.
He left and came back a few hours later and said he really needed the money and he would take 60.00. My wife said "no" and that was motivation enough for me...I bought them. I looked through them and bought a Red Book and I was very pleased that night. I felt bad but I figured if he collected them he knew what they were and was willing to take a huge loss.
What I got
5 1/10 ounce american gold eagles
the entire Franklin half dollar set
14 Silver Washington quarters
a coin from 1809 (certified shipwreck recovery)
4 Walking Liberty halves
A Kennedy half set
about 50 foriegn coins and some bank notes

That's an incredible buy.....What may be scary though, if the guy had actually collected those coins, I don't believe that he would have ever of sold 5 gold coins for $60. I would be scared that those may be....well....slightly warm coins?

Well sometimes life happens. I have taken a massive loss on things just to make sure I had what I needed to cover something else. Kinda all depends on the situation I guess.

Yes, the "warm" thought occurred to me too after I found out what they were worth. Remember though that this was years ago and I am pretty sure that gold was around half the price it is now and silver was much lower. Still hard to believe that he knew what they were worth and he may have stolen them. I guess this is where I say hindsight is 20/20, but it all turned out well and I am happy for it.

What a buy! Nothing like that would ever happen to me. I sent out a list of the wheaties I need to friends and family members and most of them replied "YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING!" when they saw the 1909 VDB S on my list. Apparently they are educated on coins ,I guess! ha BTW, I agree, your wife was using reverse psychology! ha (We women have to stick together!)

Depends on where your at I guess. If around the Chicago area here I would automatically suspect the cops were not to far behind him. Still you could not expect anyone to have receipts for coins from many, many years ago.
