Here is an interesting Coin I found. I haven't found a VAM listing that has all of it's features.

The whole date shows doubling along with the stars on both right and left, the date is very far right, There is a die chip on the right side of the first 8, the date appears slanted with the 9 slightly elevated, and the doubling also appears to have slightly effected the hair and chin. The ear may also be doubled as with other VAM's of this date I just don't have the magnification to prove it.

The reverse also shows very slight signs of doubling over "STATES OF AMERICA" It's hard to see and even harder to het a picture of. you can se the faint S over STATES best and the MER in AMERICA.

Check out the pictures. Let me know what you think.

NGiles, the doubling on your coin looks like machine. Especially under the chin. Very far date is correct. Open 9 and chip on first eight makes it VAM 4. Maybe with clearer & closer pictures something else can be dertermined.

I had noticed the VAM 4 listing, but I think the 9 is raised which would make it a VAM 8? It's hard to tell because of the doubling.

Here are a couple more pics. One shows the doubling over the ST in states, and the other shows some possible doubling over the left wing of the eagle.

What I see on the obverse is die wear. I see nothing on the reverse.

NG, VAM 8 has die chips in lower loops of both 8s and chips in both loops of 9. 9 also looks to be within normal limits to me. See if you can find any chips in date.

Here are a couple more pics to try and help.

There is a picture of the O in OF on the reverse. It looks like the die hit the coin and then slid leaving a streak of the letters closer to the rim.

And a side view of the coin by the date, you can see Two
"layers" of the date.

Looks like a combination of die wear, and some MD.

Machine Doubling and die wear. No die doubling on this one.
