I have a 1871 penny with a large B stamped on the head side and I can't see any damage on the tail side as if it was done after the coin was made. Any ideas?
Definitely post-mint stamping. I've seen a lot of coins stamped from the 19 C, but I can't give the reason. I do know there were hoarding and currency shortages around the time of the Civil War. Perhaps the stamping was for a particular use in commerce or for a merchant?
What a shame, as it is a semi-key to the series! I have a 1864L (near full Liberty) that has a big F on the obverse and a 1879 that has a counterstamp "T. APL'D FO" Something applied for, the "R" wasn't there and only part of the "O" in "FO" was there.
