Using a new digital microscope, I was able to better photograph the relief shape in the lower 8, as indicated by the arrows. Can this be attributed to die damage--or something else? I've also included a new shot of the 7 with some interesting features, followed by my original shot of the whole date. Is this typical for the 1857 S-2 (obverse of '56)? I'm very new to this series, and appreciate comments of those who are familiar with Flying Eagle die varieties

Kurt,

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of digital microscope are you using and what did it cost.

Thanks,

Jim, this is the Digital Blue QX5. I got it for $89 from a site called toygroove.com While it's a kid's scope, the captures aren't too bad, and it's easy to use. Definitely less cumbersome than my Zeiss 32-100X!

Hard to tell from images, but appears to be a stain of sorts. Of course the thing running through the 5 is a partial lamination.

The object in question is in relief, which I'm hoping the microphotographs convey. In any case, I wouldn't even post this if it were obviously a stain. Admittedly, this feature may be too subtle to matter in a numismatic sense. Btw--if photos are too poor to provide a positive ID, then they're also unable to provide a negative with any certainty (imo).

The pictures still lead me toward what we discussed in emails. That that curve inside the 8 might be a portion of another 8. My thought is that it is the uppr right or the inside of the upper right of a misplaced 8, if that.

The types of punches used for the dates on 1857 cents that I know have been confirmed are 4 digit punches consisting of 1857 and 2 , 2 digit punches. One would be for the 18 and the other for the 57.

Look closely at the 1 to see if there is any evidence of a partial 1 that would line up with the 8.

Nothing else would fit the scenario.

Thanks
