Hi all.

My name is Eric, and I have only just gained an interest in coins as of today.
While browsing through ebay, I noticed the "Wavy 2", and immediately started going through all of my 20c coins looking for 1966. Found 6 of them, but no wavy 2 obviously.
Spewing because I used to collect 1966 20c coins as a kid. Had about 200 or so of them, but just cashed them in. Never knew about the wavy 2 thing.

So anyways, over the last 12 hours or so I have been going through this forum, and researching as much as I can about different coins that are rare.

So far I have read about the wavy 2, the 2004 big head, the rams head 50c, and the federation coins, and also about the errors in the stamping like the 2000 double edge dollar coin.

I was just wondering though, if I was to go into a few banks and try and get a few thousand dollars worth of coins, what are all the different things I should be looking out for?
Those 5 are the only ones that I'm aware of so far. And I know a couple of the comemerative (or whatever they are) 50c coins had a semi-low production.

If someone could give me a list of things to look for, then that would be greatly appreciated. I think my new interest in coins might become a lifetime obsession now though. :)

P.S. If asking for a list of coins breaks any forum rules then feel free to notify me. :)

EDIT: Oh yeh, and I'm also aware of the round 1966 50c coin. Found 3 of them in a bag of coins my mother found, along with some early 1900's coins and even one from 1840-sumthin.

Hi and welcome.

I'm sure everyone would recommend an excellent first step would be to buy a catalogue, so you know exactly what different coin types are out there and how rare and valuable they are.

Here in Oz, there are two: the "Pocket guide to Australian Coins and Banknotes" by Greg Macdonald (known as "Maccas") and the Renniks "Australian Coin & Banknote Values".

But here are some gleanings from what the catalogues tell us.

Scarce Dates: many are hard to find, but aren't necessarily valuable in less-than-uncirculated condition.

5˘: 1972 is key. Some others, such as 1985, weren't issued for circulation and is only found in sets.

10˘: 1972 is also a tricky date, though not quite as tricky as the 5˘. 1985, 1991 and 1997 are some more modern scarcities.

20˘: 1971, anything between 1983 and 1995 can be hard to find (most weren't officially released for circulation).

50˘: 1972 to 1974, 1985 to 1993, and 1995 1997 are the hardest of the "regular" types.

The dollars are complicated by the multitude of mint-your-own and other NCLT issues.

$2: there's nothing particularly scarce; the 2001 seems to be the lowest mintage.

Varieties:

Apart from the ones already noted, others that come to mind are:
- The double bar 50˘ of 1966, 1979, 1980. Look for two lines sticking out of the back of the emu's head.
- 2000 Millenium 50˘, incuse flag.

Edit: Thanks for the correction to the 50˘, JAB.

Sap, what do you mean by 1995? Isn't that the commemorative Weary Dunlop one? Or do you mean 1997? The one dollar/10 cent mule is rare too... Very rare...

If you are challenged, you can attempt a collection like this http://www.gxseries.com/numis/austy..._decimal.htm (Site is a bit heavy by the way - should split pages up one day)

Trust me, it's not going to be as easy as you may think and I'm still missing some major varieties even after massive searching. I think I should go straight to the bank and order hundreds of dollars of coins. I personally don't have problem spending 10 dollars worth of coins at once so I should try that one day. lol

What's more intriguing is that you can still find unc coins in circulation even though they might be over 20 years old. I've still yet to find anything amazing but I hope to.

Welcome to coincommunity by the way. And ouch, the pain of possible wavy 2 in the pile of 1966. Doh.

Maccas is a very good start but don't treat it as infallible -Some photos are not real clear and one mistake (I think anyway) has carried over from 2007 to 2008 edition.
Do your own research anyway -plenty of web sites to help- and ebay
listings can also give you some background too. [Trust Maccas more than ebay though; some sellers tend to be very optimistic in their descriptions.]

cheers and welcome

Quite right, justabeginner. 1997 is what I meant to say. I've corrected my post. I must've gone cross-eyed trying to read Renniks and Maccas simultaneously.

Yep. I was assuming that is what joebloggs meant when he talked about the "2000 double edge dollar coin".
