In my collection: Commodus as Hercules. AD180-192. AE sestertius Denomination: AE sestertius. Mint: Rome AD 192 Size: 28.8 x 30.5 mm. Weight: 24.29 grams. Reference: Sear-5751. RIC 637 Grade: Good Fine to about VF. Pit in front of chin. Some porosity, but over all pleasing. Obverse: Head of Commodus right wearing the lion's skin headdress, with L AEL AVREL COMM AVG P FEL around. Reverse: Club with HER / CVL , ROM / ANO , AV / GV , S / C around and S C flanking the club at the bottom. The reverse basically means "HERCULES IS THE ROMAN EMPEROR" which tells of that by this time Commodus insanity had progressed to the point he not only felt he was descended from Hercules, but actually was Hercules. Some honest wear, but still an impressive, large AE. Nice one, Imperator.

Personally I don't think it's too pretty but it does have a fair bit going for it. Everyone likes a large bronze coin, especially if it is an interesting type with some significance like this one.
Despite not thinking it excels aesthetically I certainly wouldn't turn such a coin away from my collection. Not every coin can be a swan, a few ugly ducklings have their place :) I guess all things are relative too, some people collect coins with virtually no visible details. This one has readable details and a nice portrait, in fact the more I look at it the more it is growing on me.

That's what happens when you use lead piping for the conveyance of drinking water!

Quote: Personally I don't think it's too pretty but it does have a fair bit going for it. As an aficionado of fine bronzes I am stunned by the comment ! I think this is a lovely coin and has a portrait that has great style. I am jealous of this one without any hesitations. I was fortunate enough to find an as a few years back included in a group lot that someone listed without any attributions. Even more fortunate for me that by relisting the other 7 coins with attributions I not only paid off the $200 price but made around $20 net profit. It does not compare very favorably with your fine sestertius but what the hey ! The price was right ! But I have always had a soft spot for the lowly copper as.
