Any insights as to what happened with this coin? I'm still new and learning so please let me know if my next statement is accurate or not. The rim is what makes me think the damage was done at the mint. Also the coin weighs 2.5 grams.

Note the rim on your coin? Most areas are flattened. So the die is round, and the collar is inner shape is round, and the planchet is round, the rim is formed moving metal towards it. So if your coin is not round and the rim is showing on your coin, then it couldn't have been struck that way. Damaged after the strike. PSD. There can be strikes where the planchet was round, the die is round, but the shape is not round:

But what caused this to happen? The collar was not in place. So the rim around the coin is not there, the coin is not round after the strike. This happens from time to time. (not often though) But with the rim on the coin there, it tells us that you coin was altered. The one I posted was a mint error. (broadstruck)
