It looks like it accidentally went through the dryer once or twice. Fell out of a pocket and banged around in the heat for an hour or so. that is what a Dryer Coin looks like. if you google " Dryer Coin" or search on this site you will likely find a lot of examples that match yours. Would be listed as damaged. :( Welcome to the Site!

A similar Jefferson nickel thick planchet rim error sold Sept 8th for $10. Might be worth taking high resolution photos and posting online.

does the "dryer" also cause the separation into the 3 different layers as shown in picture #2 and 3

Nickels are 75% Coppper which is all on the inside. This Thin Copper Planchet as it is called is then coated all the way around in Nickel which is why it looks liek 3 layers. The original metal, and then the coating on both sides and around the rim. So if the edge is constantly banged all the way around the rim and spread out, then yes the inner core could be come visible as in the case with your coin. It's not splitting it into 3 layers as much as it's making visible what was hidden.

Unfortunetly 5 cents. It is cool looking. I have a few badly damaged coins that I shouldn't keep but... I won't ever see one like it again so to me it has a story and a history.
You came to the right place though, I have only been here 6 months or so and have learned so much just by asking questions or reading ot her posts. A few of my great finds turned out to be damaged or common which is always disapointing.

I'm hopeful this is intended to be a joking comment .... although the new member might believe you are stating facts. USA nickels are an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel ... uniformly distributed and homogeneous ... not three layers. David

USA nickels are an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel ... uniformly distributed and homogeneous ... not three layers. That's correct. Mayflower2020, you are probably confusing nickels with dimes, quarters and halves, which are made up of a copper core surrounded by layers of this alloy, 75% Cu - 25% Ni. I agree that this is a Dryer Coin, I come across these fairly often.

. There's no way that happened at the mint.

I wonder if someone placed a bit of steel over the edges and rolled this a bit pushing downwards. The edges starting to fall over the center of the planchet and starting to roll inwards may have left those lines on the outside edges of the coin?

I retract my statement. Sorry for the misinformation. I even fact checked it but must have been looking at a different coin at 4am. Thanks for correcting me so the right information could be passed on.
